Top five youngest men's singles players to win a match at Madrid Open

Brazilian Joao Fonseca is the youngest player to win a match at the Madrid Open.
More than a few young players from the ATP tour have registered breakthrough wins at the Madrid Open, thus establishing La Caja Magica as a breeding ground for rising talent on the ATP Tour.
These talented individuals have capitalized on their early successes while also challenging the status quo and the dominance of established stars. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five youngest men’s singles tennis players to win a match at the Madrid Open:
Jakub Mensik (18 years, 233 days)

Jakub Mensik, playing for the first time in Madrid, made it to the third round on debut in 2024. The Czech beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-4, 7-6(3) to progress into the second round and, at 18, became one of the youngest ATP players to record a win at the event.
A three-set 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 win against Grigor Dimitrov followed before his journey ended in the third round against Felix Auger-Aliassime with a retirement. By winning the Miami ATP 1000 title in 2025, No. 54 Mensik became the lowest-ranked player to win the men’s singles title in Miami.
Rafael Nadal (18 years, 137 days)

Rafael Nadal won his first match in Madrid as an 18-year-old in 2004, in his second appearance at the ATP 1000 event. The following year, Nadal won the first of his five titles at the Madrid Open.
He defeated Croatian Ivan Ljubicic to put a Spanish name on the winner’s list for the second time in three years. Juan Carlos Ferrero was the first homegrown champion in 2003, only a year into the tournament’s inception.
Federico Cina (18 years, 24 days)
Federico Cina joined the party in the 2025 edition when he defeated Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong in a battle between two wildcards. The Italian prevailed 7-6(5), 6-1 over Wong in the opening round before going down to Seb Korda in the second round.
A month earlier in Miami, Cina took out Francisco Comesana to become the first 2007-born player to win an ATP Masters 1000 main draw match.
Carlos Alcaraz (17 years, 364 days)

In 2021, Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player to win a match in Madrid, courtesy of a 6-4, 6-0 win over Adrian Mannarino.
The Spaniard lost to compatriot Rafael Nadal in the second round but returned the next year to become the youngest Madrid Open champion at 19. A successful title defence in 2023 made him the first to do so in Rafael Nadal (2013 and 2024).
Joao Fonseca (17 years, 244 days)
The 2024 edition of the Madrid Masters was Fonseca’s first ATP 1000 event. He notched up a maiden ATP 1000 win when he defeated American Alex Michelsen, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
Joao Fonseca was a wildcard entry in Madrid, where the Brazilian entered the record books as the youngest man to register a win at the event at the age of 17. His first ATP title this season came at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.
