UFC lightweight champion says Justin Gathje ‘crossed a line.’
Ilia Topuria’s lightweight title defense at UFC Freedom 250 has already become deeply personal ahead of fight night. The reigning UFC Lightweight champion is preparing to defend his belt against Justin Gaethje in Washington, D.C., but the tension between the two stars has escalated dramatically over the past week.
Topuria has closely followed every public remark made by Gaethje during the build toward the highly anticipated showdown. While trash talk has always been part of the fight game, the undefeated champion believes his opponent crossed the line with recent comments directed at his ex-wife, Giorgina Uzcategui.
“All that guy is, is a gimmick,” Gaethje told Fox Sports Australia while discussing Topuria. “He calls himself the king. He thinks he’s a God. What an annoying little bastard. I couldn’t imagine being in a room with him for 30 minutes listening to him talk about himself …
And I can say this: I would leave him. That’s all I’m saying. I would leave him.”
The comments immediately sparked backlash online, with many fans interpreting them as a direct reference to Topuria’s personal life. The champion did not initially respond publicly, but that changed during the first episode of UFC Embedded released on Monday.

Following the release of the episode, Topuria issued a lengthy statement on X addressing the controversy and defending the mother of his daughter. The Georgian-Spanish star made it clear that he felt Gaethje had gone too far with the personal remarks.
“Justin crossed a line,” Topuria wrote.“What happened between my ex-wife and me is our business. We may no longer be together, but she is the mother of my daughter. To everyone insulting her or speaking about things they know nothing about: show some respect.
You don’t have to respect our relationship. But respecting someone’s mother should be one of the most basic codes in life.”
The rivalry between the two fighters had already intensified before Gaethje’s latest comments. Last week, Gaethje’s father, John Ray, added fuel to the fire while speaking confidently about his son’s chances in the main event.
Ray reportedly stated that Gaethje was ready to beat “another short guy” at UFC Freedom 250. Topuria quickly responded online, warning that he would show Gaethje’s father exactly what he already knows once the cage door closes on Sunday night.
Despite the increasingly personal nature of the feud, the matchup remains one of the biggest fights on the UFC calendar this year. Topuria enters the contest looking to further cement his dominance at lightweight, while Gaethje hopes to capture championship gold in one of the most heated rivalries of 2026.
The two are all set to collide in the main event of the historic UFC White House card, where they will square off in a highly anticipated title unification bout with championship gold and divisional supremacy on the line.
