Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return lasts just 69 seconds.
Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the UFC ended devastatingly as Max Holloway was awarded a first-round TKO victory after the Irish superstar suffered an apparent leg injury just 1:09 into their UFC 329 main event.
The fight marked McGregor’s first UFC appearance in five years and drew enormous attention. Nearly 20,000 fans packed the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, while UFC CEO Dana White announced a live gate exceeding $25 million, underscoring the magnitude of McGregor’s comeback.
Although the atmosphere echoed the biggest nights of McGregor’s career, the contest itself ended before it ever had the chance to develop.
Conor McGregor’s comeback begins with a bizarre sequence before injury strikes

As the opening bell sounded for the UFC 329 main event, McGregor charged forward aggressively, throwing two kicks in quick succession. However, he slipped while attempting both strikes, allowing Holloway to immediately capitalize with punches as the former two-division champion tried to regain his footing.
Holloway stayed composed, attacking McGregor’s lead leg while the Irishman continued to struggle with his balance. At one point, McGregor fell to the canvas again, allowing Holloway to land additional strikes while briefly looking confused about what had happened.
Moments later, Holloway landed another kick to McGregor’s leg. As McGregor stepped backward, he visibly winced before lifting his injured right leg, prompting the referee to halt the fight. The official result was recorded as Max Holloway def. Conor McGregor via TKO (injury) at 1:09 of Round 1.
McGregor’s return had generated enormous excitement throughout fight week despite his lengthy absence from competition.
The former UFC champion entered the arena sporting a new mohawk hairstyle that appeared to pay tribute to Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell. He also made Holloway wait during an extended walkout, adding to the anticipation inside the sold-out venue.
The excitement surrounding the event had been building all week. More than 9,000 fans attended the pre-fight press conference, while over 12,000 packed the arena’s lower bowl hours before the main event.
The crowd had already erupted after Paddy Pimblett submitted Benoît Saint Denis in the co-main event, creating the perfect stage for McGregor’s comeback.
Instead, the contest ended almost immediately after it began. Replay footage shown following the stoppage appeared to suggest McGregor’s right leg may have already been compromised before the fight officially started, potentially explaining his awkward movement and the explosive opening sequence.
For Holloway, the victory adds another marquee name to his resume, although the ending was far from the competitive showdown many had expected.
