The former two-division champion faces another lengthy recovery after suffering an injury at UFC 329.

Conor McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon ended in heartbreaking fashion at UFC 329, and attention has now shifted to one question: when could the former two-division champion realistically fight again?

McGregor’s comeback lasted just 69 seconds before a serious knee injury forced the contest to be stopped against Max Holloway. What was expected to launch another championship run instead became another difficult setback in a career that has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries in recent years.

Although McGregor has already vowed to return, his latest injury means fans may have to wait much longer before seeing him compete again.

Conor McGregor’s injury is expected to require surgery

Following UFC 329, McGregor confirmed that he will undergo surgery before beginning the rehabilitation process.

The Irishman also revealed that he intends to complete a period of “pre-habilitation” before the operation, allowing doctors to reduce swelling, improve mobility and place his knee in the best possible condition for surgery.

Medical evaluations have reportedly pointed toward a significant knee injury, with UFC CEO Dana White stating that doctors suspect McGregor suffered a torn ACL after his knee buckled while throwing an early jumping kick.

The injury came without warning. After the fight, McGregor admitted the setback caught him completely by surprise, explaining that he had thrown the same kick countless times throughout training camp without experiencing any discomfort.

Despite the devastating result, McGregor has remained optimistic, telling fans that he intends to return once his recovery is complete.

When could Conor McGregor fight again?

While neither McGregor nor the UFC has announced an official return date, a realistic timeline suggests his comeback is unlikely before early-to-mid 2027.

A torn ACL typically requires surgery followed by nine to 12 months of rehabilitation before an elite mixed martial artist can safely return to full competition. That process can sometimes take even longer depending on the severity of the injury, rehabilitation progress, and the demands of returning to championship-level competition.

Because McGregor has confirmed he will undergo surgery and complete extensive rehabilitation afterward, a return before the end of 2026 appears highly unlikely.

Based on current medical expectations and McGregor’s own comments, an early-to-mid 2027 comeback represents the most realistic projection. However, it is important to note that this remains an estimate rather than an officially confirmed timetable.

The UFC will almost certainly avoid rushing one of its biggest stars back before he is fully healthy. McGregor has already endured a lengthy recovery following the broken leg he suffered against Dustin Poirier in 2021. Another major knee injury means the promotion is expected to prioritize a complete recovery over an accelerated return.

For now, the focus shifts away from championship aspirations and toward rehabilitation. Whether McGregor eventually returns for one final run or another blockbuster fight will depend entirely on how successfully he recovers over the coming months.

What injury did Conor McGregor suffer at UFC 329?

McGregor reportedly suffered a serious knee injury, with doctors suspecting a torn ACL after his knee buckled during the opening minute of the fight.

When is Conor McGregor expected to return?

There is no official return date. Based on typical ACL recovery timelines and McGregor’s plans for surgery and rehabilitation, early-to-mid 2027 is the most realistic estimate, though this remains speculative.
