India will debut in the championship with Ahmedabad Defenders.

The FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship 2023, the highest level of international club volleyball, will kick off at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru on December 6 (Wednesday). The volleyball extravaganza will feature eight of the best men’s club teams from across the world, vying for the coveted trophy.

The 2023 edition of the Volleyball Men’s Club Championships will mark a significant milestone in Indian volleyball history for a couple of reasons. Not only will it be the first time that the Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship will be held in India, but Ahmedabad Defenders will become the first Indian team to feature in the competition, which has been running since 1989.

The Defenders qualified for the Volleyball Club World Championship 2023 after winning the Prime Volleyball League earlier this year.

Ahmedabad Defenders have been drawn in Pool A with heavyweights Itambe Minas of Brazil and defending champions Sir Sicoma Perugia of Italy. Itambe Minas are the reigning South American champions and have won the Brazilian Superliga 13 times. Sir Sicoma Perugia are the current European champions and have won the Italian Serie A1 four times.

Sada Cruzeiro Volei of Brazil, Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds and Halkbank Spor Kulubu of Turkey make up Pool B. Sada Cruzeiro Volei are the most successful team in the history of the Club World Championship, with four titles and three runners-up finishes. They have also won the South American championship 10 times and the Brazilian Superliga seven times.

Japan’s Suntory Sunbirds will be the first Japanese team to compete at the Men’s FIVB Club World Championship. They are the reigning Asian champions and have won the Japanese V.League 11 times. Halkbank Spor Kulubu are the Turkish champions and have reached the final of the European championship twice.

All teams will play the other team once in the group and the top two teams will qualify for the semi-finals on December 9. The final will be played on December 10.
