The Indian men’s volleyball team is set to go up against Bahrain in the third-place fixture of the AVC Men’s Cup 2026 on Sunday. They would be looking to finish on a high, after going down fighting in a thrilling five-setter against Indonesia in the semi-final.It is worth noting that this is already a monumental improvement from their only previous appearance in 2023, when they had finished at the 15th spot. Dragan Mihavolic’s side had finished at the top of pool A, winning all their five matches.

In fact, they dropped just a solitary set—against Chinese Taipei in the third game. They started off with 3-0 wins against New Zealand and Kazakhstan, eventually also ending the preliminary round with similar victories against Bahrain and Australia.
As a result, they rose to Number #42 in the World Volleyball Rankings—their highest in over a decade.
India started off as favourites in the semi-final. However, the packed crowd at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Amdavad seemed to take its toll, as they made errors under pressure.
This is not to say that they didn’t fight with all their heart. However, small margins in the second and fifth sets eventually cost them the game 25-15 24-26 20-25 25-19 13-15.
The Jerome Vinith-led side will now go up against a Bahrain side, which suffered a 23-25 22-25 25-23 20-25 against Korea in the other semi-final.
Interestingly, the only defeat suffered by the World Number #40 side in the pool stage was a hammering at the hands of the hosts.

This should give the Indians a lot of confidence ahead of a game, which could give the sport an impetus in the nation.
