This will be the second qualifiying event for Paris Olympic Games 2024.
The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 is set to be held from May 03 to May 13 in Jinju, South Korea. Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, Mirabai Chanu, will be spearheading the six member Indian contingent at the continental championships. The continental championship will be the second qualifying event after the World Weightlifting Championships 2022, for the Paris Olympic Games.
27-year-old Mirabai Chanu last competed at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 in Colombia and bagged the silver medal in the 49 kg category. Post the podium finish, Chanu underwent a five-month rehab programme to nurse her shoulder and back injuries. The Manipuri lad’s best performance at the continental meet has been bronze (in 2020) and she would look to better the colour of the medal in this edition.
In the men's section, Lalrinnunga (67kg) and Achinta Sheuli (73kg) will be making their comeback post injury. Both the weightlifters secured gold medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in their respective weight categories. Narayana Ajith and Sheuli will be competing in the same weight category (73kg) alongside Todkar in the 61 kg weight category.
