Manipur lifter claims bronze in 55kg category.

Bindyarani Devi made history as the first Indian to win a medal at the IWF World Cup, competing in the 55kg women’s category, which includes both snatch and clean & jerk events. Her strength in the clean & jerk event once again earned her two medals. She achieved this milestone in Thailand, host of the World Cup organized by the International Weightlifting Federation.

Lifting 113kg in the clean & jerk, she recorded the second-highest score in the category and secured a silver medal. The Manipur-born athlete lifted 83kg in the snatch event, and with a total lift of 196kg, she clinched the first World Cup medal for her country, taking home the bronze.

This victory was particularly significant for Bindyarani, as she competed in a different weight category than in the previous World Cup. At the 2022 World Championships, the 25-year-old competed in the 59kg weight category. She decided to reduce her weight to 55kg despite it being a non-Olympic category. Since then, she has been in excellent form over the last 24 months, continuing to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Her journey began at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she won a silver medal and broke the Games record in the clean & jerk event with a 116kg lift. She maintained her streak of silver medals at the Asian Championships with lifts of 83kg in snatch and 111kg in clean & jerk. Here’s hoping she ascends further up the podium and experiences the taste of gold in her upcoming competitions.
