Mirabai Chanu bags silver at 2025 IWF Senior World Weightlifting Championships

Mirabai Chanu has won a total of three medals at the World Weightlifting Championships.
Mirabai Chanu has once again brought glory to India by clinching the silver medal in the ongoing 2025 IWF Senior World Weightlifting Championships at Forde, Norway, on October 2.
Competing for the first time in an international event since the heartbreak at the Paris Olympics 2024, Chanu showcased exceptional strength and composure, registering a total lift of 199kg – 84kg in Snatch and 115kg in Clean & Jerk – to earn the silver medal.
The defending champion Ri Song-gum of North Korea won the gold medal with a sensational performance with 213 kg (91kg + 122kg), setting a new world record. Thailand’s Thanyathon Sukcharoen claimed the bronze with a total of 198 kg (88kg + 110kg).

This achievement marks Chanu’s third medal at the World Championships level. She previously made history by winning the gold at the 2017 IWF Senior World Championships in Anaheim, USA, in the 48kg category and silver medal at the 2022 IWF Senior World Championships in Bagota, Colombia.
With his, the 30-year-old also ended India’s three-year wait of a medal at the World Weightlifting Championships.
Chanu’s medal also ends India’s three-year wait for a podium finish at the World Championships. Notably, all 18 medals India has won at the Worlds so far have come from women weightlifters (3 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze).
Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Chanu narrowly missed out on a medal at the Paris Olympics, finishing fourth. She matched her personal best in the snatch with 88kg but faltered in her attempts at 114kg in the clean & jerk, ending with a total lift of 199kg, just 1kg short of the bronze, which went to Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao (200kg).
However, Chanu made a strong comeback this year, returning to action with a gold medal at the Commonwealth Championships in Ahmedabad in August 2025. The Indian champion now appears to be back to her winning ways, once again raising hopes for more podium finishes in weightlifting.
