Antim Panghal will eye a historic gold medal.
Top wrestlers from all over the world are all set to contest at the World Wrestling Championships 2023 at the Štark Arena in Belgrade, Serbia. The tournament, which is scheduled to be held from September 16 to 24 will feature a 30-member Indian contingent across three events namely — men’s freestyle, Greco-Roman, and women’s freestyle wrestling.
In the absence of experienced campaigners like Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Deepak Punia, a lot of expectations will be on the young brigade, including the likes of 2023 Asian champion Aman Sherawat, Commonwealth Games 2022 gold medalist Naveen Malik, and two-time U20 World champion Antim Panghal. 2021 World Championships bronze medalist Sarita Mor is the lone seasoned competitor in the Indian lineup.
A whopping 90 quotas for the Paris Olympics 2024 will be up for grabs at the World Wrestling Championships 2023. This elevates the tournament to a crucial stage for all wrestlers competing for an Olympic quota. In the Belgrade event, each of the 18 Olympic weight divisions will have five quotas available.
However, the Indian wrestler contingent will be contesting under a neutral flag after the World Body (UWW) suspended WFI last month.
India at World Wrestling Championships
India has managed to grab a total of 22 medals, including one gold, five silver, and 16 bronze medals, in the history of the World Wrestling Championships. Sushil Kumar is the only Indian wrestler to have won a gold in the competition. He won the top honour in the men’s 66kg in 2010. The nation currently stands 43rd in the list of most successful countries at the event.
In the previous edition, India finished 24th overall as the nation claimed two medals — thanks to Vinesh and Bajrang’s bronze-medal wins. This was Vinesh’s second and Bajrang’s fourth medal at the World Championships. With that, India ended its campaign with a tenth and ninth-place finish in the men's and women’s freestyle team rankings respectively.
