Reetika Hooda became the first Indian woman to clinch gold medal.

Indian wrestlers bagged a total of nine medals (one gold, two silver and six bronze) at the recently concluded U-23 World Wrestling Championships 2023. The grapplers were not permitted to use the name, flag or anthem of India and had to play under United World Wrestling due to the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for not conducting elections on time.

The Indian contingent has won the highest number of medals in the history of the championships bettering the performance of the last edition where they won 6 medals (one gold, one silver and four bronze). In precise the men’s freestyle won two bronze medals followed by a bronze in Greco Roman and six medals – one gold, two silver and three bronze in the women’s section.

Women’s wrestling has been the most impressive in the recent edition while men’s did not enjoy major success winning only two medals overall and only one in Olympic weight category. Off the nine medals, India has won four in the Olympic category.

Notably, Reetika Hooda, became the first Indian woman to be crowned as the U-23 champion. She defeated the 2021 junior world champion Blades of USA (9-2) in the final in women’s 76 kg (Olympic Category).

She became only the second Indian ever since Aman Sehrawat (men’s freestyle 57 kg, 2022) to be crowned as U-23 World Champion.

Neha Sharma lost a close bout to Japanese Imai (2-4) in the final of 55 kg while Jyoti Berwal lost to two-time senior world champion Amit Elor via techincal superiority (0-10) in the finals of women’s 72 kg. Meanwhile, Sumit became the lone Greco Roman wrestler to get a medal in this edition. He defeated Martinez Cravo of Ecuador to win bronze.
