Backlash 2025 is just around the corner, and it’s shaping up to be a great show. WWE has announced many matches for the event already, and if everything clicks, it is expected to be one of the best premium live events of the year.
Backlash has mostly taken place after WrestleMania throughout its history and that gives the show a great responsibility to successfully serve as a follow-up of the grandest stage of them all.
This will be the 20th edition of the show, and despite not being a part of the ‘Big Four’ PLE’s of WWE, Fans have witnessed some historic matches at Backlash. So, join us as we look back and rank our top 10 greatest Backlash matches of all time.
10. Seth Rollins vs The Miz (Backlash 2018)
Seth Rollins is one the greatest in-ring workers of all time but he was at the top of his game in 2018. He stole the show and won the Intercontinental championship at WrestleMania 34 and followed that up with one of the best WWE matches of the last decade against the Miz. Both men brought the best out of each other and told an engaging story with the match itself.
9. Bad Bunny vs Damian Priest (Backlash 2023)
This match can be considered a sports entertainment perfection. Damian Priest has always been considered a reliable worker but he created something magical with Bad Bunny in front of the Puerto Rican crowd.
Memory moments like Bad Bunny’s entrance, him putting Damian in a figure-four leg lock and then the interference from Carlito and Savio Vega have made this match ‘Iconic’ in every sense of the word.
8. Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels vs Triple H (Backlash 2004)
After an unforgettable main event of WrestleMania 20, the trio of Chris Benoit, Shawn Michaels, and Triple H had another excellent triple-threat match for the big gold belt at Backlash.
Triple H’s Heavyweight style, Shawn Michaels’s high-flying actions and Chris Benoit’s near-perfect technical ability blended perfectly together and resulted in this match being considered among the finest works of all three superstars.

7. Randy Orton vs Edge (Backlash 2020)
WWE promoted this bout as ‘The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever’ which resulted in fans having unrealistic expectations from it.
Both Randy and Edge wrestled an underwhelming match at WrestleMania and had to deliver with this one and that’s exactly what they did. Despite it being a lengthy encounter, it just flew by. However, The absence of the live audience was the only downside of this encounter.
6. Steve Austin vs The Rock (Backlash 1999)
This one is riding the same boat as our previous entry. Stone Cold and Steve Austin were two of the biggest names in professional wrestling at the time but still failed to deliver a match fans were hoping for at the show of shows.
However, all that disappointment was cleansed with their ‘No Holds Barred’ encounter at Backlash 1999. It was a classic Attitude Era match and is still a treasured memory for the fans.

5. Cody Rhodes vs AJ Styles (Backlash 2024)
After ending the historic title reign of Roman Reigns, Cody Rhodes found the first challenger for his title in AJ Styles. Both wrestlers posses unmatched in-ring talented and created something special in front of one the best crowds in WWE’s History.
Fans were behind every big move they did. The match was greatly praised by the critics as well as it received the perfect five stars rating from Dave Meletzer.

4. John Cena vs Edge (Backlash 2009)
John Cena and Edge can be considered as ‘Wrestling Soulmates.’ They had great chemistry and never wrestled a bad match together. it’s very difficult to make a ‘Last Man Standing’ engaging but these two did that effortlessly.
Each set peice was booked to perfection and it concluded with an iconic spot of Big Show chokeslaming John Cena through a spotlight.
3. Randy Orton vs Cactus Jack (Backlash 2004)
Fans remember the ‘Legend Killer’ phase of Randy Orton very fondly and this match was a major highlight of that.
Randy Orton came out of this match looking like a superstar and Cactus Jack played a crucial role in achieving that. The encounter was very intense and violent, which made it even more entertaining.
2. John Cena vs Shawn Michaels vs Randy Orton vs Edge (Backlash 2007)
Fans had the privilege of seeing four of the greatest of all time go head-to-head at Backlash 2007 and the match still exceeded expectations. Shawn Michaels and John Cena were already involved in a heated rivalry but adding the dynamics of Rated RKO made this one even more exciting.
The match peaked during its final stretch and WWE booked a very intriguing finish for it as well.
1. Triple H vs The Rock (Backlash 2000)
This match is why we love professional wrestling. After Stone Cold Steve Austin was sidelined due to an injury, WWE picked the Rock to lead the charge as the biggest baby face of the company.
The visual of Vince, Shane, and Triple H stacking the odds against the Rock and Steve Austin coming in for the save is just legendary. The match ended with The Rock winning the WWE Championship and having his first title reign as the face of the company.
