Cody Rhodes suffered a horrific injury at WrestleMania.

‘The American Nightmare’ Cody Rhodes retained the Undisputed title against Randy Orton in the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last weekend. However, he was attacked by Orton after the match, who took him out with the infamous punt kick.

During the Night 2 Countdown show, Jackie Redmond revealed that Rhodes has not been medically cleared because of an orbital injury. She also added that there is currently no set timeline for his return. WWE attributed the injury to the punt kick by Orton.

However, PWInsider reported that Rhodes’ orbital injury was caused by a punch from Orton just moments before he also hit referee Charles Robinson with an RKO. The report added that the swelling around Rhodes’ eye developed shortly afterwards.

Dave Metlzer on Wrestling Observer Radio has provided a new update regarding Rhodes’ situation. According to Meltzer, Rhodes is in concussion protocol, which means he is not cleared for the in-ring action. However, he is not believed to have suffered a broken orbital bone.

“He is in concussion protocol, which means that no physicality, but he does not have a concussion or does not believe he has a concussion. The eye has not been fully examined but the belief is that it’s not a broken orbital.

I think the fact that he came out looking like that and shot that angle makes me think they are of the belief that it’s not something that’s going to keep him out for a long period of time….The hope is, and I would say the belief is, he didn’t have that (broken orbital bone).”

Rhodes recently appeared during the Raw after WrestleMania 42 last night, engaging in a promo segment with CM Punk. A potential clash between the two friends with the Undisputed title on the line was hinted at during the segment, with Cody telling Punk to just say when he wants the match.

Further examination will likely reveal more about Cody‘s injury and whether he will be able to continue after retaining the title at Mania. Speaking of Mania, an update on why Randy Orton lost the match has also been revealed.

According to a report from Bodyslam, Orton was initially planned to win in the main event of Night 1. However, the decision was changed within the last few weeks, with the decision for Cody to retain the title.

On the other hand, Fightful Select, there were internal discussions about Randy Orton winning the title, but the final decision, made in the closing weeks, was for Cody Rhodes to retain.

Although it is not clear why the decision was made by WWE, some speculations point to the rumoured injury for Orton, following a report from the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, which reported that Orton is “hurting” right now, which could possibly lead to a change in plans at WrestleMania. The report came a day before Night 1 of the PLE, where the match took place.
