The newly crowned Interim WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green, on the August 7 SummerSlam fallout show of SmackDown, teamed up with Women’s United States Champion Tiffany Stratton to battle Women’s Tag Team Champions Fatal Influence (Fallon Henley & Lainey Reid) for the tag titles.
The duo of Green and Stratton failed in their conquest of double titles as Fatal Influence picked up the win. Post-match, Nia Jax and Lash Legend ambushed the two, with Nia flaunting Green’s Interim title, signalling that she has her sights set on it.
However, a report from Wrestling Observer’s Bryan Alvarez revealed that Green sustained an injury during the tag team match. The report did not mention the exact injury to the Women’s Champion.
“Chelsea Green was injured during the match on Smackdown last night. We don’t know the exact injury at this point but hopefully she won’t be out of action too long.”
Chelsea Green confirms injury report
Following the report, Chelsea Green, via her IG, confirmed the report, revealing that she has suffered a broken orbital bone around her right eye. The interim WWE Women’s Champion expressed her disappointment, stating that she needs time to process it all.
“I have no idea what that means for me. Usually, you guys have seen me, like, play into every single injury, but this feels different. Obviously, this feels very different. It feels frustrating. I’m upset. I feel, like, if I didn’t have bad luck, I would have no luck at all.
So, I just need to take a little bit more time to process and to heal from the head trauma that is going on right now. We’ll see what happens. We’re just going to take it day by day.”
Per Alvarez, Green sustained the injury during the tag team match, which means the post-match attack by Nia and Lash was not the cause of her injury.
That said, it still is a sad state of affairs not just for Green, who finally climbed the top and even managed to walk out of the ladder match unscathed but suffered an injury just a few days into her title reign.
WWE’s idea to crown an interim WWE Women’s Champion at SummerSlam was done as the reigning Champion Rhea Ripley was out of action since Clash in Italy due to a knee injury. Rhea underwent surgery recently and is likely going to be out of action for the foreseeable future.
