Rey faced Austin Theory on the Red Brand.

Less than a week before the 2026 Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia, concern is growing around the status of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio following a scary moment on Monday Night RAW. What initially appeared to be part of the storyline now seems far more serious, casting doubt over Mysterio’s immediate future.

The incident occurred during the January 26 edition of WWE RAW, when Mysterio faced Austin Theory in an impromptu matchup arranged earlier in the night by Adam Pearce. The bout itself was competitive, but it unraveled after outside interference from members of The Vision shifted the momentum.

What happened during Rey Mysterio vs Austin Theory match?

As the match broke down, Penta and Dragon Lee attempted to counter the numbers game at ringside. Despite their efforts, Austin Theory capitalized late, delivering a stomp to secure the victory. Almost immediately afterwards, Rey Mysterio was seen clutching his shoulder, prompting visible concern from officials.

The situation escalated when The Vision appeared ready to continue the assault. The referee quickly intervened and flashed the dreaded “X” signal, a universal sign that a legitimate injury may have occurred. A female doctor rushed to the ringside as the segment abruptly shifted, and Mysterio was spared from further physicality.

Legitimate injury confirmed backstage

According to Cory Hays, Rey Mysterio was legitimately injured and was escorted to the back by medical personnel. Fan footage from the arena supported the report, showing the referee’s signal and medical attention being administered immediately.

This development is particularly disheartening given Mysterio’s recent history. The Master of the 619 missed significant time last year due to injury, and his son Dominik Mysterio is currently sidelined as well. With the Royal Rumble looming, the timing could not be worse.

At this stage, WWE has not released an official statement regarding the nature or severity of the injury. However, Mysterio’s previously announced entry into the 30-Man Royal Rumble is now very much in question.

If he is unable to compete, speculation has already begun about a possible replacement. Finn Balor, notably, was denied a Rumble spot earlier after Adam Pearce stated the field was full, a decision that could now be revisited. For now, uncertainty surrounds one of WWE’s most beloved legends.

Was Rey Mysterio legitimately injured on WWE RAW?

Yes. Multiple reports indicate Mysterio suffered a real injury and was taken backstage by medical staff.

What part of Rey Mysterio’s body was injured?

Rey Mysterio was seen favoring his shoulder, though WWE has not confirmed specifics.

Will Rey Mysterio compete in the Royal Rumble 2026?

His status is unclear, and WWE has yet to provide an official update.
