Samantha Johnson, also known professionally as Samantha Irvin, was born on January 9, 1995, in Dennis, Massachusetts. Samantha, the eldest of six siblings, began classical music lessons at the age of four. During her formative years, her musical skills led to national competitions in classical flute. She was born and raised in New Bedford’s North End area, attending Normandin Middle School and then New Bedford High School.
Her enthusiasm for professional wrestling was clear from a young age, when she attended WrestleMania XIV in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1998. Samantha excelled both musically and theatrically in high school, playing Dorothy Gale in a production of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and obtaining a gold medal with the New Bedford High School Jazz Choir at the International Association of Jazz Educators’ State Jazz Finals.
Samantha Irvin’s music career
Samantha’s musical path is both wide and amazing. From 2011 until 2015, she wowed audiences as the lead female vocalist in the Michael Jackson tribute musical Thriller – Live. Her abilities propelled her to the national scene in 2015 when she featured on season 10 of America’s Got Talent, where she impressed viewers with her version of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and advanced to the semi-finals.
Later that year, she appeared in a one-of-a-kind production called Home at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in New Bedford, where she demonstrated her numerous abilities by singing, whistling, dancing, narrating, and playing the flute, with her five siblings. Samantha released the EP 27 Underground in 2016, which includes her breakthrough hit “Jump High,” with backup vocals from her brothers. That same year, she played Betty Rizzo in a performance of Grease at the New Bedford Festival Theatre.
Samantha continues to broaden her career, appearing on FOX’s I Can See Your Voice in 2020, when she performed Lizzo’s “Good as Hell”. After moving to Las Vegas, she appeared in several shows, including Vegas! The Show, where she played renowned celebrities such as Gladys Knight and Tina Turner.
Samantha has been in WWE since 2021
WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry helped Samantha’s debut into the professional wrestling scene. Although her original interview at the WWE Performance Center to become a wrestler was unsuccessful, her WWE career began in April 2021 when she was appointed as the ring announcer for WWE 205 Live on Peacock. She rapidly established herself in the position, going under the ring name Samantha Irvin.
Irvin began her WWE career as a ring announcer for WWE NXT, before being elevated to ring announcer for WWE SmackDown on FOX in January 2022. Her career progressed, and in February 2023, she moved to WWE Raw on the USA Network. Her outstanding performance at WrestleMania XL in April 2024, when she presented 14 matches, drew high accolades from veteran announcer Michael Buffer.
