Rey Mysterio’s possible retirement in 2027.
Rumours of the 51-year-old wrestler potentially retiring from WWE in 2027 have sparked discussion about how the legendary luchador could bring his remarkable career to a close. Even though no exact retirement date has been officially set yet, there are chances for WWE to pay tribute to one of the greatest high-flying wrestlers through certain matches.
Some of the dream matches that he can have in order to end his glorious career are fighting with his son, Dominik Mysterio; achieving the dream of being world champion once again; sharing the ring with his daughter, among others. There are various matches that Mysterio should have before retiring in 2027.
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
1. A rematch with Dominik Mysterio

The final match between Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio is one of the most emotional matches that WWE can ever arrange before Rey calls it quits in the wrestling world. Their rivalry got to its climax during WrestleMania 39 in 2023 when Rey won against his son in a very personal match after the latter disrespected and defied his family for too long.
However, the story is not quite over yet. Rey has once voiced his intent to revisit the rivalry, saying that Dominik is the person who will eventually retire him.
In this case, WWE will get a chance to tell their story to completion. The two wrestlers will walk into the ring with Dominik proving that he has grown past his father. For his part, Rey will defend his legacy in a personal fight against his son.

2. Tag with Aalyah Mysterio
While there had been bad blood between Rey and Dominik, the HOF star shares a great relationship with his other family member – his daughter, Aalyah Mysterio. Sharing a ring with her could be one of the most meaningful achievements on Rey’s retirement checklist. The Veteran star has publicly expressed his desire to wrestle alongside his children, and Aalyah has now begun training at the WWE Performance Center after joining the developmental system.
Aalyah could make her in-ring debut alongside her father, giving her an opportunity to learn from one of wrestling’s most experienced performers while creating a special moment for the Mysterio family. WWE could introduce the pairing through a mixed tag team match, with Rey and Aalyah facing a team that threatens their family.
Teaming with Aalyah would allow him to create another lasting family memory before stepping away from active competition. It would also give WWE a natural way to introduce Aalyah to its audience while establishing her own identity rather than relying solely on her famous surname.
3. A WrestleMania showdown with CM Punk

The two men have shared a past in WWE, most notably with their intense rivalry in 2010, in which Punk made life difficult for Rey and his family. The two would share a very personal rivalry where Punk questions Rey’s loyalty to his family and attempts to get him into his faction.
This match should happen at WrestleMania since the event is always associated with legends and veterans who want to show that they are still at their best despite their age. This would make their farewell tour more memorable and less of a nostalgia act.
4. Another run with the World Championship

Rey Mysterio has already managed to accomplish the greatest feat in his career so far by winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22 back in 2006. Almost two decades down the line, winning another world championship would serve as the best way to honor his longevity.
Rey has kept himself on the active roster of WWE by continuing to wrestle young superstars, showcasing how he still remains faster than most of them with his trademark 619. A world championship reign does not necessarily have to be long to leave a great impression. WWE can write up a great storyline where Rey gets one last chance to win the title before retiring.
1. A retirement match against Penta or Dragon Lee

If Rey Mysterio’s WWE career is approaching its final chapter, his retirement match should ideally feature a wrestler who represents the future of lucha libre. Penta and Dragon Lee would both be compelling opponents, offering different ways to celebrate Rey’s influence on the next generation.
Penta’s striking style, charisma, and experience would make him a formidable final challenger. Their encounter could be presented as a clash between two celebrated masked performers who have helped popularise lucha libre internationally. Dragon Lee, meanwhile, would represent the future of high-flying wrestling. His athleticism and connection to the Mysterio legacy make him a natural candidate to carry the torch forward.
Either match could deliver a fitting passing-of-the-torch moment. Rey could push his opponent to the limit before ultimately losing, allowing the winner to receive a career-defining victory. If WWE wants to make the farewell especially meaningful, Dragon Lee could be the ideal choice, with Rey endorsing him as one of the wrestlers capable of carrying lucha libre’s legacy into the future.
However, these five matches would give the company several compelling ways to celebrate his career: resolving his rivalry with Dominik, chasing one last world championship, facing CM Punk at WrestleMania, teaming with Aalyah and passing the torch to Penta or Dragon Lee. Above all, Rey deserves a farewell that honours not only his championships but also the generations of wrestlers and fans he has inspired.
