John Cena dismisses claims of 'selling his soul' to The Rock during infamous heel turn at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025

The 17-time World Champion joined the dark side for the first time in 2025.
After failing to win the men’s Royal Rumble match, John Cena managed to secure the win in the men’s Elimination Chamber match and punch his ticket to WrestleMania 41. Shortly after the match, Cody Rhodes arrived for a face-off.
The Rock arrived with Travis Scott moments later, with Rock looking to get an answer from Rhodes that if he’s going to ‘sell his soul’ to the Final Boss. Rhodes not only rejected the offer but told The Rock to go f*ck himself.
What followed was one of the most unexpected moments in WWE, as Cena, during his retirement tour, turned heel for the first time in his WWE career. Cena aligned with The Rock during the segment and delivered a brutal beatdown on Rhodes to further build their match for Mania.

Naturally, the alliance led many WWE fans to believe that Cena ‘sold his soul ‘ to The Rock, but the 17-time World Champion has now refuted these claims.
Speaking at a recent FAN EXPO, clarified that he did not sell his soul, noting that just because Cody and The Rock were talking about it when he got involved in the storyline. Cena also added that his real motive was to win the World title, reiterating that he doesn’t have a ‘soul deal’ with The Rock.
“So everybody says I sold my soul. A few people say I sold my soul to the Rock just because Cody and the Rock were talking about soul selling and I happened to get in there. Does that mean Travis Scott sold his soul as well? I don’t know. Is there a soul for sale thing? No.
No. I just wanted to win a championship. The Rock doesn’t have my soul. He doesn’t. I don’t think he ever got Cody’s. I just want to make things clear. We did not have a soul deal, DJ and I. We have a good relationship. I don’t need to also give him my soul,”
Cena went on to capture the Undisputed title in the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 against Rhodes to break the tie with Ric Flair and become the one and only 17-time World Champion. He concluded his retirement tour with his final match against Gunther at SNME in December 2025. On the other hand, since Elimination Chamber, The Rock has been absent from WWE programming.

Speaking at a recent Fan Expo, Cena clarified that he did not sell his soul, explaining that Cody Rhodes and The Rock happened to be discussing the concept around the time he entered the storyline. Cena added that his sole motive was to win the world title, reiterating that he does not have a “soul deal” with The Rock.
