The 17-time World Champion bid farewell to WWE last month.
‘The 17-time WWE World Champion’ John Cena embarked on an exciting retirement tour in 2025, making 36 appearances and competing in major matches, PLEs, and even capturing the Undisputed title at WrestleMania to break the tie with Ric Flair and become the one and only 17-time World Champion.
Cena also captured the Intercontinental title in November to become a Grand Slam Champion in WWE. While there were many fan-favorite moments, including the iconic and now, in hindsight, a wasted heel turn, disappointed fans were eager to see how the turn would unfold as Cena turned heel for the first time.
However, the absence of The Rock and Travis Scott, who were not only present during the heel turn but were part of the storyline, especially The Rock. Cena has been somewhat dodging the question about the absence, as well as other ‘what if’ questions about his retirement tour.
Now, in a recent appearance during a Fan Expo in New Orleans, Cena answered questions about what retirement tour match he would replace with a dream match.
John Cena highlights the positives

When asked about what retirement tour match he would replace with a dream match, John Cena explained that he doesn’t dwell on hypothetical “dream matches” or wish to replace any bout from his retirement tour. Instead of focusing on the hypothetical scenarios, he values what did happen.
“There’s a perspective out there that I will dodge questions like that, so I will lean into that, right? I want to lean into why I say what I say. Like, I just don’t think like that.
Because if I were to say like, ‘Oh man, I wish after I turned heel that The Rock and Travis Scott were on my team.’ That would be pretty cool, right? Yeah, they’re crazy megastars, and having them would be pretty cool. But we didn’t. And that’s what happened.“
Cena also highlighted meaningful moments like wrestling Randy Orton in Orton’s hometown, bringing CM Punk to Saudi Arabia, working with and helping develop Logan Paul internationally, and creating something special with AJ Styles.
“But what did I get? I got to have a match with Randy Orton in his hometown. I got to get CM Punk to go do the Kingdon of Saudi Arabia. I got to bet on somebody who I think has a bright future in this business in Logan Paul, and try to get the best out of him overseas in Paris.
And maybe grease the whiles to convince him to finally be a full-time WWE employee, which he currently is. And I got magic with AJ Styles.”
The 17-time World Champion concluded by saying that while involvement from The Rock and Travis Scott would have been great, it simply didn’t happen. Rather than dwelling on a fantasy he couldn’t control, he embraced what he was given instead, and found something truly magical, which meant a great deal to him.
“So yes, the Rock and Travis Scott probably would have been great. Who knows? It didn’t happen. What I got in return, instead of wishing in some fantasy element that I can’t control. What I got in return was magic. And I wouldn’t trade that for anything.”
