Starting with Seth Rollins winning the first-ever championship and Gunther dominating as one of the best champions ever, this championship has witnessed many significant reigns by other wrestlers as well, which include Drew McIntyre, Jey Uso, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, and Damian Priest.

5. Damian Priest

He secured the championship by cashing in his Money in the Bank contract just after Drew McIntyre won the match against Seth Rollins at WrestleMania XL, which took place on April 7, 2024.
It is considered to be one of the most memorable title wins of WrestleMania that year. Almost immediately after McIntyre celebrated his win, Priest took advantage and won the championship, finishing off McIntyre’s reign very shortly after it started.
The period during which Priest held the title represented an important milestone in his singles career. Having been a part of The Judgment Day stable of wrestlers, Priest grew up to be a star of the Stamford-based promotion, and winning the World Heavyweight Championship got him into the main event scene of the company.
Having to prove himself in the ring against other opponents, while at the same time facing the problems related to the stability of his own faction, Priest’s reign as the champion lasted until SummerSlam 2024, where Gunther won it from him. His championship period lasted for 118 days.
It is currently considered to be the fifth-longest reign by an individual in the history of this championship, as of October 18, 2026.

4. CM Punk

Despite having won the title twice, the 169 days of CM Punk’s second World Heavyweight Championship tenure is the fourth-highest on the list. Punk won the title on November 1, 2025, during Saturday Night’s Main Event XLI, defeating Jey Uso to become the World Heavyweight Champion.
This was a crucial moment in Punk’s comeback in the Stamford-based promotion and earned him yet another stint as a world champion. CM Punk is known for his outspoken nature, good storytelling skills, and ability to start feuds. This is what made CM Punk’s championship very interesting during his title reign.
His title reign went into the following year, putting him among some of the best in the history of the modern championship. The reign of Punk also connected two big storylines at WrestleMania, since Punk lost to Roman Reigns in the finals of the event to become the World Heavyweight Champion.
Punk lost to Reigns on April 19, 2026, giving him 169 days as a world champion. The loss took Punk out of contention for the championship, as he is not one of the best in the rankings anymore.
3. Roman Reigns — 182 days and counting

Roman Reigns takes the third spot in his ongoing World Heavyweight Championship reign. Reigns won the title from CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 on April 19, 2026, and added another feather to his cap of long championships and main event status.
The inclusion of Roman Reigns in the list of greatest champions is no surprise for those who know about his stature in the company. Reigns held the Universal Championship for 1,316 days, making him a great champion of the modern times. Nevertheless, this feat was recorded for a different championship and thus is not mentioned in the current list.
The reign lasts around 182 days as of October 18, 2026, putting Reigns above CM Punk with his 169-day reign. The reign is currently ongoing; thus, its duration is yet unknown.
Roman Reigns has already broken the record of being the longest title holder in 2026. He successfully defended his title from Seth Rollins, Penta, and LA Knight in PLEs.
2. Gunther

Gunther is second only to the longest individual World Heavyweight Championship reign of the modern era. The Ring General won the title by defeating Damian Priest at SummerSlam 2024, thus starting a reign based on his deliberate in-ring style and a physique of considerable physical prowess.
With an already proven Intercontinental Championship reign that helped him earn the reputation as one of the toughest Intercontinental Champions in the company, his world-title reign was based on his style of fighting, which is based on giving tough fights to opponents while also controlling the pace of his matches.
Some of the best matches of his world-title reign involved championship defenses against RAW’s top-tier superstars. With the ability to wear down his opponents, attacking their vulnerable body parts and imposing his style of fighting, Gunther was indeed a tough champion to defeat.
But his world-title reign ended abruptly at WrestleMania 41 when Jey Uso defeated him and won the World Heavyweight Championship on April 19, 2025, and the reign of Gunther as the champion lasted only 51 days.
1. Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins is the holder of the record for the longest reign in WWE’s current World Heavyweight Championship history. He won the championship, becoming the inaugural champion by defeating AJ Styles in the finals of the championship tournament at Night of Champions 2023 in Saudi Arabia.
This was a new era in RAW, because the Stamford-based promotion launched the championship after the 2023 Draft show that made Roman Reigns’ Undisputed WWE Universal Championship exclusive to SmackDown. Rollins accepted the challenge and played an important role in building the credibility of the newly formed championship.
Rollins finally dropped the championship at WrestleMania XL on April 7, 2024, when McIntyre won the championship and ended his 316-day reign. It is ironic that the same night Damian Priest cashed in the Money in the Bank contract to win the championship.
Seth Rollins defended the championship during his 316-day reign against such famous opponents as Finn Balor, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Drew McIntyre. His storyline with Nakamura was especially personal, while his championship match with McIntyre at WrestleMania XL was an important moment in the early history of the championship.
