WrestleMania was conceptualized by Vince McMahon.

Since its inception in 1985, WrestleMania has transformed into the biggest Premium Live Event (PLE) for WWE and the biggest stage in pro-wrestling. The PLE, conceptualized by Vince McMahon and named by ring announcer and WWE Hall of Famer Howard Finkel, has delivered many iconic moments.

The event has also drawn some of the biggest crowds in history. However, as with everything else, not every WrestleMania has been sold out or packed to capacity. Here, we take a look at five of the lowest-attended WrestleMania events in WWE history.

5. WrestleMania 22 – 17,159

The 22nd edition of Mania took place on April 2, 2006, at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois, featuring the tagline “Big Time.” The main event saw John Cena defeat Triple H to retain the WWE Championship. However, the biggest story from the show was Rey Mysterio defeating Kurt Angle to capture the World Heavyweight title and dedicating the win to his late friend Eddie Guerrero.

Despite other major names on the PLE, including Randy Orton, The Undertaker, Vince McMahon, Torrie Wilson, and Shawn Michaels, among others, the event drew a total of 17,159 fans.

4. WrestleMania 9 – 16,891

The first-ever Mania event held outdoors was the 9th edition in 1993. The show emanated on April 4, 1993, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The main event of the show saw Yokozuna defeat Bret Hart to win the WWE Championship. However, Hulk Hogan challenged Yokozuna for the title moments later and won it in less than 30 seconds.

The controversial ending was not only one of the most debated moments of the event, but the backstage drama was also featured in the documentary WrestleMania IX: Becoming a Spectacle, which aired on Peacock. The event drew a total attendance of 16,891.

3. WrestleMania 11 – 16,305

With a total attendance of 16,305, the 11th edition, which took place on April 2, 1995, at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut, is the third-lowest attended Mania in history.

The main event of the show saw former NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor defeat Bam Bam Bigelow. Meanwhile, Diesel defeated Shawn Michaels to retain the WWE Championship in the co-main event.

2. WrestleMania 7 – 16,158

The 7th edition of WrestleMania aired on March 24, 1991, at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California. The main event of the show saw Hulk Hogan defeat Sgt. Slaughter to retain the WWE Championship.

The event also featured The Undertaker’s Mania debut and the beginning of his iconic undefeated streak. The show was scheduled to be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, but it was moved to the adjacent Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena due to safety concerns. Rumors point towards low ticket sales, and the arena drew in a total of 16,158 fans for the show.

1. WrestleMania 36 – 0

The first and only two-night Mania to feature on the list is the 36th edition, which was filmed on March 25 and 26, 2020, at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, and aired on tape delay as a two-night event on April 4 and April 5, 2020.

The first-ever two-night Mania was held without a live audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in effectively the lowest ticket sales and zero fans in attendance. Night 1 main event saw The Undertaker defeat AJ Styles in a Boneyard match, while Drew McIntyre defeated Big Show to retain the WWE title in the main event of Night 2 of the show.
