The 17-time WWE World Champion recently defended his title at Backlash 2025!

Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena defended his title for the first time on May 10 at WWE Backlash 2025. The 17-time World Champion created history defeating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 to break the tie with Ric Flair and become the one and only 17-time Champion.

However, before the title win sunk in, a familiar opponent struck Cena, as his career-long rival, Randy Orton, took down the Champion with the RKO and challenged him to a title clash in his backyard, St. Louis, on May 10th.

The two career-long rivals clashed in the main event of Backlash 2025 and delivered a performance reminiscent of their prime days. The match saw multiple RKOs and Attitude Adjustments; however, in the end, Cena managed to pin Orton after using some not-so-legal means.

This was Cena‘s first title defense, and he is likely set to battle R-Truth, according to reports, especially after Cena put Truth through a table during the Backlash post-show press conference, despite Truth having helped him during the match. The shocking betrayal might lead to a clash between the two.

John Cena has 24 dates left on his WWE retirement tour

The 17-time World Champion is on a 36-date retirement tour, with 12 appearances already completed. There are 24 dates left on his retirement tour. This has led to speculations of what his final matches will be and who his opponents will be. Notably, while Cena has 24 dates left on his schedule, he isn’t expected to wrestle on vast majority of those dates.

Boston’s WCVB news station announced that John Cena’s final match is scheduled to take place in the city this December.

“John Cena’s last match is scheduled for December at the TD Garden in Boston.” Reporter Shayna Seymour stated.

However, the report didn’t contain any specified date in December, meanwhile, Cory Hays of PW Nexus previously reported that there is a Saturday Night’s Main Event planned for TD Garden on December 13.

Cena, a Massachusetts native, has been billed from West Newbury for the entirety of his wrestling career, which is about a forty-minute drive from TD Garden in Boston.

The 17-time World Champion is already advertised for 11 more dates, the majority of those taking place internationally. According to Bloody Slam, his next scheduled appearance is at the upcoming May 24 Saturday Night’s Main Event, where as mentioned, he is expected to battle R-Truth.
