SmackDown GM Nick Aldis' in-ring debut planned for WWE SummerSlam 2026 - Report

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis was on the receiving end of a brutal beatdown by ‘The Ring General’ Gunther last week in Oklahoma City. This marked another major escalation between the two after both had engaged in a physical altercation backstage at Night of Champions last month in Saudi Arabia.
It all started with Gunther confronting Aldis backstage and accusing him of favoritism, even throwing personal insults at the GM, calling him a failed wrestler.
Things took another turn last week when the Ring General gave Aldis an ultimatum to add him to the Undisputed title match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam.
However, Aldis instead announced a tag team match where Gunther will team up with Sami Zayn to take on the team of Rhodes and Punk at this weekend’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. The Ring General then attacked Aldis, locking in the sleeper hold, until Cody Rhodes arrived for the save.
The continued altercations and now the brutal attack have fueled speculations about Aldis returning to in-ring action to settle the dispute against Gunther. A new report has now provided an update regarding the possibility of the GM strapping his wrestling boots once again.
Nick Aldis vs Gunther is planned for SummerSlam
According to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson, the match between Nick Aldis and Gunther is reportedly “100% set” for SummerSlam, though WWE has not officially announced it yet.
The 39th edition of SummerSlam will air as a two-night spectacle on Saturday, August 1, and Sunday, August 2, 2026, at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Notably, if Nick Aldis does make his in-ring return, it will mark his WWE debut, despite joining the company as a backstage producer and later as the on-screen General Manager of SmackDown. Aldis has spent his career wrestling in TNA and multiple independent promotions.
While Aldis transitioned into a backstage role from an active competitor, he did not retire due to any injury, which has fueled more speculation.
The precedent for authority figures, backstage personnel, and even commentators to feud with a major name and then end up competing inside the ring is nothing new in WWE. Fans are now waiting for WWE to officially announced the showdown for SummerSlam.
