Tonight’s episode of SmackDown will air live from Des Moines!

The May 02 episode of Friday Night SmackDown will emanate live from the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. The show will continue the build towards the Backlash PLE, likely announcing more matches for the show on May 10th.

Tonight’s show will also see Aleister Black back in action after making his highly teased return last week. ‘The Viper’ Randy Orton is also set to make an appearance as he prepares to battle the Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena at the upcoming PLE.

As Backlash 2025 approaches, storylines are starting to take shape. Ahead of tonight’s show, here are the top five storylines that fans need to watch out for on the May 2, 2025, episode of WWE SmackDown.

5. Women’s United States Championship

Zelina Vega surprised everyone last week when she pinned Chelsea Green to capture the Women’s United States title. Vega became the only woman other than Green to hold the newly introduced title.

However, the former Champion will likely demand a rematch, a likely showdown at the upcoming PLE. Green has already been complaining of being treated unfairly and might use the Secret Service to attack Vega.

4. Proceed with caution

After defeating Naomi at WrestleMania 41 and exacting her revenge, Jade Cargill started focusing on her future and challenged the current WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton for a singles match.

However, Naomi ambushed her during the match, signaling that the feud is far from over. It will be interesting to see how the storyline progresses after the ambush.

3. Nia Jax returns

While Naomi ambushed Jade Cargill during the match, the WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton received the same fate moments later, as while confronting Naomi, she was ambushed by Nia Jax, who was absent from WWE programming in recent times. The return of Jax and the subsequent attack likely mean another showdown between the two.

2. Jacob Fatu vs everyone

The newly crowned United States Champion, Jacob Fatu, once again displayed his dominance last week by single-handedly taking out LA Knight, Damian Priest, and Drew McIntyre during a #1 contender’s match between Knight and McIntyre.

The match ended in a disqualification after Priest ambushed McIntyre. A fatal four-way match for the Backlash PLE is a potential scenario involving the four stars.

1. 15-time WWE World Champion

In an upcoming showdown, which fans hope for, the current Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena will battle a familiar foe in Randy Orton at the Backlash PLE.

While Cena wants to continue his historic 17th title reign, Orton wants to win his 15th World title and reach one step closer to the historic 17-title reign. Orton is set for an appearance tonight as the build-up to the clash continues.
