Rey Mysterio is believed to have picked up an injury during WWE SmackDown this week

WWE legend Rey Mysterio was spotted being helped to the back by WWE staff after what appeared to be an injury suffered during his six-man tag team match on SmackDown. The Hall of Famer had teamed up with Rey Fenix and Dragon Lee to take on American Made, but was later seen limping and in clear discomfort as he exited via the ramp.

Despite this, WWE’s official rundown for WrestleMania 41 still lists Mysterio in his scheduled match against El Grande Americano. However, with less than 24 hours to go until Night One of the event, concerns are growing about his status.

Should Rey Mysterio be medically unable to compete, WWE has no shortage of worthy replacements ready to defend the honor of lucha libre. Here are three top stars who could step in for the Master of the 619 and go toe-to-toe with El Grande Americano on the grandest stage of them all.

3. Andrade

Over the past year, Andrade has quietly built a case as one of WWE’s most resilient and hard-hitting superstars. From going toe-to-toe with Carmelo Hayes in a brutal rivalry to pushing United States Champion LA Knight to his limit, Andrade has delivered nothing short of excellence inside the squared circle.

While he may not be the first name that comes to mind as Rey Mysterio’s replacement at WrestleMania 41, history tells us he thrives under pressure. Fans will remember last year’s WrestleMania XL, where Andrade stepped up on short notice to team with Mysterio after Dragon Lee was taken out backstage. Despite the chaos, Andrade held his own in the spotlight, proving he can rise to any occasion.

If Mysterio is officially ruled out due to injury, there may be no better option than Andrade. A former United States Champion and an ambassador of lucha libre in his own right, he brings the perfect mix of legacy, skill, and intensity needed to face El Grande Americano on the biggest stage of them all.

2. Dragon Lee

Since storming onto the WWE scene at Madison Square Garden on March 10, 2025, El Grande Americano has been a one-man wrecking crew with a clear target: the Latino World Order (LWO). His debut was anything but subtle, ambushing Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee mid-match with a series of punishing suplexes that left fans stunned and the locker room on high alert.

Just one week later, Americano made his in-ring debut on Monday Night RAW, choosing Dragon Lee as his first victim. But instead of respecting the sacred code of lucha libre, Americano desecrated it, ripping off Lee’s mask mid-match and forcing him to tap out to a devastating Ankle Lock, sending a brutal message to the entire LWO.

His alliance with Chad Gable’s American Made has only escalated the chaos. Americano has been using a metal plate hidden in his mask to deliver skull-rattling headbutts, leaving a trail of battered opponents, including Mysterio himself.

With Rey Mysterio’s WrestleMania status now in doubt, it may fall on Dragon Lee to fight for more than just victory. This could be his chance to avenge his mentor, defend the LWO’s honor, and silence El Grande Americano once and for all on the grandest stage in sports entertainment.

1. Rey Fenix

Rey Fenix recently made his WWE SmackDown debut and has already started turning heads, much like his brother Penta did before him. The high-flying luchador quickly picked up momentum and entered the 2025 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, where he impressed fans by making it all the way to the final three, alongside Andrade and Carmelo Hayes.

But just as it looked like Fenix might pull off a huge win, El Grande Americano struck. While Fenix was climbing to the top rope for one of his signature moves, Americano appeared out of nowhere and knocked him off balance, leading to his elimination from the match.

The interference wasn’t random earlier in the battle royal; Fenix had thrown Chad Gable out, and Gable clearly wasn’t happy about it. Backstage, he was seen mocking Fenix and praising Americano for the cheap shot.

If Rey Mysterio isn’t cleared to compete at WrestleMania 41, Rey Fenix could be the ideal replacement. Not only does he carry the lucha libre legacy, but he’s got a personal score to settle with El Grande Americano and there’s no bigger stage than WrestleMania to make it happen.
