These five surprises shook the very foundation of WWE with the onset of the year 2024

WWE has been garnering immense success with the onset of a new era led by the regime with key figures like Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Nick Khan at the helm of the management. A major part that began in the early foundations of this new management were some shocking moments.

These surprises bewildered the WWE Universe and sent shockwaves across the entire wrestling landscape. From the ending of historic title reigns to the surprising underdogs rising to the occasions, these five moments shook the first five months of the year 2024:

5. The Rock’s return

The first WWE show of 2024, Monday Night RAW kicked off the start of shocking moments for the company with the return of one of its biggest stars, The Rock.

The Great One was involved in a confrontation with former WWE star, Jinder Mahal. Furthermore, this appearance set the tone for The Rock’s involvement on the road to WrestleMania 40 which brought out a ruthless and villainous side of his personality, The Final Boss.

4. Rhea Ripley’s reign comes to an unexpected end

Rhea Ripley‘s reign as the WWE Women’s World Champion began at WrestleMania 39 when she defeated Charlotte Flair. Mami dominated the women’s division on the RAW side defeating the likes of Nia Jax, Zelina Vega, Ivy Nile, Zoey Stark, and lastly, Becky Lynch.

But in an unfortunate turn of events, she was attacked by her arch-rival Liv Morgan backstage on the RAW after WrestleMania 40. This led to Ripley suffering a shoulder injury, putting her on the shelf for months and relinquishing her title in the process.

3. Drew McIntyre’s victory moment ruined

Drew McIntyre had been longing for a big championship moment in front of the live audience since his first World title win at WrestleMania 36. His wait was finally over when he defeated Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 40 to capture the World Heavyweight Championship.

However, McIntyre’s moment of glory was short-lived as his ego got the best of him. Following his altercation with his rival CM Punk, who served as guest commentator for the match, Punk attacked him indirectly helping Damian Priest to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase to slither the title away from him in a massive shocker.

2. Sami Zayn rises as the ultimate underdog

Among the top-tier WWE superstars who challenged Gunther for his WWE Intercontinental title, Sami Zayn was the least credible challenger as the champion noted. But the fans thought otherwise and rallied behind the Ultimate Underdog for his match against Gunther at WrestleMania 40.

With the entire WWE Universe behind him, Zayn showed resilience and overcame The Ring General to end his 666 record-setting reign as champion.

1. The fall of the Roman Empire

For nearly four years, Roman Reigns held the WWE under siege on his Island of Relevancy as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. However, at WrestleMania 40, he finally met his match in the form of the People’s Choice, Cody Rhodes.

In one of the most memorable main event matches that saw the involvement of legends like The Rock, John Cena, and The Undertaker, Rhodes overcame the odds and finally dethroned Reigns to capture the title. This marked the end of Roman Reigns‘ 1,316 title reign with Cody Rhodes spectacularly finishing his story.
