‘The Best in the World’ used a term ‘PDS’, here’s everything you need to know

Minnesota is renowned as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and with the 2024 SummerSlam go-home edition of RAW airing live from the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul, there were as many storylines in need of a last push before Saturday’s PLE as the state has bodies of water.

The opening segment of 7/29 WWE RAW began with Seth Rollins, the special guest referee for the CM Punk-Drew McIntyre ‘fight’ at SummerSlam, who appeared in attire suitable for a referee—or at least a ref travelling to Paris for fashion week.

He wore zebra-printed boots and leather leggings to complement his black and white striped (ref-inspired) shirt, which included his distinctive shoulder pads. It was certainly a look, but let’s hope he wears a more classic WWE official jersey for SummerSlam. Seth was shortly joined by Punk and McIntyre.

Punk was clearly unhappy with Drew, but they skillfully blurred the kayfabe line and willfully utilized it to further the plot. Punk then remarked about how his name was yelled in venues around the country while he was away, and with the audience performing an acapella rendition of Seth’s theme music, Punk delivered the night’s most memorable statement from the dome. “They sing his song, they chant my name, you’re the third wheel in this match at SummerSlam,” Punk said to Drew in the middle of the ring. “Drew, how does it feel?

“The one positive about PDS (Punk Derangement Syndrome) is you get to be in my orbit, you get to breathe the rare air that CM Punk produces.” These weren’t the words of a face, and Punk is suffering from his sort of post-traumatic stress disorder after telling Drew he was walking into the ring with “the best in the world,” a name that once fit the Punk brand as well as “The Excellence of Execution” did Bret Hart, but he is no longer CM Punk.

Punk hasn’t looked sharp since his return to the ring, and the only thing worse than “old Punk” is “injured Punk” coming off the IR. Punk was displeased with Seth’s participation in all of this, and he sought to check Rollins as well.

Perhaps all of this is setting up a full heel version of Punk because after 8-months of this experiment, it is safe to say that the CM Punk that left WWE never returned and never will, but there are few superstars with the creative mind necessary to reinvent and evolve the beat of their drum to fit the beating pulse of the WWE Universe©– CM Punk is one of those superstars.
