This is WWE’s biggest feud right now, yet neither star is cleared to compete.

When CM Punk first returned to the business in unexpected way at Survivor Series 2023, McIntyre was not among the most desirable prospective opponents for him. Seth Rollins was a clear option for WrestleMania 40, with Roman Reigns a close second.

How did the feud start between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre?

McIntyre was in the midst of a career renaissance at that time, but there was no clear path. He was coming off two high-profile losses to Rollins in World Heavyweight Championship fights and was headed for the ‘Mania mid-card.

As it turned out, McIntyre accidentally hurting Punk during the men’s Royal Rumble battle was the best thing that could have occurred to each of them, as well as Raw’s main event. Punk’s absence from The Show of Shows was a significant setback, but it did pave the way for an even more intense rivalry between him and McIntyre.

Despite being sidelined by injury, both men have kept their feud alive through social media and their odd encounters on WWE TV. Every time, they’ve blown it out of the park, masterfully creating anticipation for their impending appearance.

Following Punk’s Clash of the Castle tease at the end of his most recent promo on May 6 Raw, fans were left wondering whether WWE planned to deliver the highly awaited bout at the event, save it until SummerSlam, or give it when it was least expected.

When can the match between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre be expected?

At Clash at the Castle, McIntyre has only two plausible matches: facing Punk or challenging Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. McIntyre will be a babyface in front of his home country fans, therefore the heel vs. heel dynamic will be less important.

As previously said, Punk’s return to the ring in mid-June may be too soon, and it is not worth taking the risk of aggravating the injury. McIntyre vs. Punk would have been the show’s big event, but McIntyre vs. Priest is a good substitute.

So, what can happen is Drew McIntyre at his home gets a chance to redeem himself by winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Damian Priest and on the same day we might see CM Punk making his return. McIntyre’s opportunity in Scotland would more than compensate for his defeat to Roman Reigns in the first iteration two years ago.

The 2020 Royal Rumble winner will be able to defend the world championship versus Punk at SummerSlam, and the outcome will be unpredictable. McIntyre may realistically retain to extend their program and lay the path for Gunther to dethrone McIntyre at Bash in Berlin. WWE can take a variety of approaches with Punk vs. McIntyre, but waiting until SummerSlam to offer fans that first match is the best bet.
