As WWE prepares for its first-ever two-night SummerSlam on August 2 and 3 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, fans are buzzing about marquee matches, dramatic turns, and surprise appearances. While the rematch between John Cena and Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship headlines the event, speculation continues to swirl around one name: The Rock, also known as The Final Boss.

Despite playing a pivotal role in Cena’s heel turn earlier this year, The Rock has been conspicuously absent from WWE programming. He was missing at WrestleMania and hasn’t been seen on-screen since the post-Elimination Chamber press conference. With no promos, teases, or video packages in recent weeks, fans are wondering if SummerSlam will be another no-show for The Final Boss.

The Final Boss remains silent

With The Rock absent from every major WWE event since February, including WrestleMania, hopes for his return at SummerSlam are fading. If there were plans for a surprise appearance, WWE has kept it eerily quiet.

Still, some fans hold out hope. Notably, Cody Rhodes was recently seen wearing sunglasses and a watch resembling ones The Rock famously sported, fueling speculation that a heel turn could be on the horizon. Could this be a subtle nod or a red herring? For now, the mystery remains.

John Cena’s babyface return fuels return rumors for The Rock

The biggest twist leading into SummerSlam occurred during the final SmackDown before the event. John Cena, who had been WWE’s top heel since Elimination Chamber, shockingly thanked Cody Rhodes and seemingly returned to his babyface roots. In doing so, he indirectly called out The Rock for abandoning him.

“That was just the boot in the a** that I needed, For 20 years, day in and day out, I have forged a reputation off of hard work, honesty, and respect. And I now realize that five months ago, I flushed it all down the toilet, chasing false glory when I bought into somebody’s crazy idea to make shocking TV.

And the people that were supposed to be on my team – they left. And they left me alone, trying to pretend to be something I’m not,” he added, in a clear reference to The Rock.” Cena Said.

Is there still a chance?

Despite the odds, fans know WWE is never short on surprises. With Cena’s emotional promo and his reconciliation with Cody Rhodes, punctuated by a beer toast, the storyline could be setting the stage for a third act. Could The Rock still crash the party and shock the world?

The Final Boss’s appearance may be unlikely, but if WWE wants a game-changing moment, SummerSlam 2025 would be the place to deliver.
