WWE was forced to reverse these controversial decisions.
In a year marked by historic developments, Monday Night Raw made its transition to streaming, finding a new home on Netflix, while ESPN became the exclusive broadcaster for WWE pay-per-views.
The year also featured a memorable farewell tour honoring 17-time World Champion John Cena, alongside numerous incredible returns, intense feuds, and unforgettable matches.
However, fans also witnessed some lacluster PLEs, bad booking choices, and much more that caused massive backlash. Here, we will take a look at four such bad creative decisions in 2025, which the promotion was forced to reverse.
4. Giulia’s US title reign

In June, Giulia defeated Zelina Vega to capture the Women’s United States title, her first on the main roster. Similar to Stephanie Vaquer’s push, fans expected similar success for the former NXT Women’s Champion.
However, what transpired was a horrible 133-day title reign that saw her barely being featured on television. Giulia defended the title only twice and lost it against the inaugural Champion, Chelsea Green, as the promotion quietly pivoted and put the title on Green, who has been able to work with the poor quality of material she has been given.

3. Charlotte Flair’s Royal Rumble win

After a long hiatus, Charlotte Flair made her return during the women’s Royal Rumble match and outlasted everyone to win it, an outcome that faced massive backlash as many fans were quick to point out the promotion’s overlooking many deserving contenders. The plan to pit babyface Flair against Tiffany for the Women’s title at Mania failed miserably
Flair’s alliance with Alexa Bliss has helped win back fans, reversing much of the earlier backlash and restoring support for Charlotte. However, the Royal Rumble booking remains widely regarded as one of the worst decisions of 2025.
2. Gunther taps out to Jey Uso
Another controversial win at Royal Rumble was Jey Uso eliminating John Cena to win the men’s Royal Rumble match. However, unlike Flair, Jey managed to win at WrestleMania, defeating Gunther to capture the World Heavyweight title, his first World title in WWE.
The win caused massive backlash, especially the finish, which saw Jey put the sleeper hold on Gunther, forcing him to tap out. While Jey Uso was both popular and deserving of the title, the finish could have been handled differently to protect Gunther’s aura of dominance.
As one of WWE’s most powerful forces, Gunther tapping out should be reserved for very rare occasions to preserve the significance and impact of such victories.
1. John Cena’s heel turn
One of the most talked about and historical moments of 2025 is undoubtedly John Cena turning heel and joining the dark side for the first time in his illustrious career, that too in his final year with limited dates. The involvement of The Rock and Travis Scott, which intrigued fans, turned out to be the worst link in the turn, and their subsequent absence absolutely ruined the storyline.
Cena tried to save the storyline with some scathing promos, but the G.O.A.T. was unable to justify the turn in Rock’s absence and the heel turn became a moment, fans wanted to forget and cheer for Cena in his final year. WWE ultimately opted to turn Cena face before SummerSlam, in another badly executed and poorly planned way, but the fans didn’t care as the John Cena from their childhood was back.
What qualifies as a “worst creative decision”?
In this context, the worst creative decision refers to booking choices, storyline developments, or match outcomes that were widely criticized by fans and experts for being illogical, undermining talent, or failing to deliver the expected entertainment value.
