WWE has been considering expanding the Royal Rumble event to two nights.

Earlier reports have revealed that WWE is seriously exploring the possibility of turning the Royal Rumble event into a two-night show, with the change potentially coming as soon as the 2027 edition in Phoenix, Arizona.

Currently, only WrestleMania and SummerSlam are the two-night PLEs on the calendar. Regarding the push to make the Rumble PLE a two-night affair, a WWE Hall of Famer has theorized that ESPN is likely behind the push.

Speaking on Something To Wrestle, WWE Hall of Famer JBL, while emphasizing that he had no inside knowledge of the discussions, noted that ESPN would have considerable interest in WWE filling one of the quietest weekends on the U.S. sports calendar.

“I would think it’s both. I don’t have any insight into what they’re doing, but obviously it’s a negotiation of both, and it’s probably ESPN. I’m sure they’re looking for something that weekend.”

The 2027 Royal Rumble is scheduled to take place in February, although WWE has yet to announce an official date. This could place the PLE on the weekend between the NFL Conference Championships and the Super Bowl, and JBL suggested that ESPN could see a major WWE event as an opportunity to keep sports fans engaged during the break.

“That is one of the most dead weekends in sports. The NFL has tried to figure out a way to figure out what to do that weekend.

I feel like that would probably be ESPN saying, we have a really big problem here with this weekend keeping people around leading up to the Super Bowl.”

The WWE Hall of Famer also advocated for a two-night Rumble, noting that the men’s and women’s Rumble matches can be separated to each night and build additional matches around marquee matches.

“The Rumble takes so long, well over an hour for the one match, and then you have the women’s match as well, so both of them are over an hour.

They start the road to WrestleMania. So they’re big deals, these Royal Rumbles. So yeah, I think it makes perfect sense to separate the Rumbles from one night to the next, and then dress those around with the matches that you want.”
