The match was intense from start to stop
The main event of WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event featured Kevin Owens challenging “The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship.
Adding to the nostalgia, Rhodes proudly sported the classic WWF Winged Eagle Championship, a title iconic to legends like Hulk Hogan and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. This throwback belt was introduced for one night only, underscoring the gravity of the bout.
The bell rang and Owens immediately played mind games, stepping out of the ring to size up both Cody Rhodes and the championship. Rhodes, unfazed, pursued Owens around ringside and attacked, slamming him into the apron and commentary table. After a tope dive from Rhodes, he visibly tweaked his ankle but managed to roll Owens back into the ring.
Rhodes kept up the pressure with a drop-down uppercut and a front suplex, but Kevin Owens wisely escaped outside to recover. The challenger shifted momentum by slamming Rhodes spine-first into the ring post and delivering a devastating back suplex onto the commentary table, taunting Randy Orton with a cheeky nod to his move set.
Back from the commercial break, the action heated up as the two traded signature moves. Owens put Rhodes on the top rope and hit a senton atomico, but it wasn’t enough. He followed up with his own rendition of the Flip, Flop, & Fly, complete with a crotch chop, only for Rhodes to counter with his version, finishing with a Bionic Elbow. A snap scoop power slam from Rhodes got the crowd roaring.
Rhodes connected with a Beautiful Disaster kick for a close two-count, but Owens evaded a springboard move by retreating to the floor.
When Rhodes followed, Owens nailed a superkick and set up for a high-risk move on the announce table. However, Rhodes countered with a jaw-dropping Cody Cutter on the table, and then another inside the ring for a near fall.
The match escalated further when Owens landed an avalanche fisherman buster for an incredibly close pinfall. Chaos ensued as referee Charles Robinson was accidentally taken out, giving Owens the opportunity to hit a Stunner—but there was no one to count.
Cody Rhodes capitalizes and retains Undisputed WWE Title
A backup referee, Eddie Orengo, rushed in but also got caught in the mayhem. Owens, desperate to capitalize, introduced a steel chair, but Rhodes fought back, hitting a Cross Rhodes onto the chair.
Sliding the chair out of the ring, Rhodes covered Owens as Robinson groggily counted the three. Cody Rhodes retained the Undisputed WWE Championship in a dramatic and chaotic showdown, cementing his status as one of WWE’s most resilient champions.
