Here are the five key takeaways from Night 2 of WWE SummerSlam 2026.
Night 2 of the 39th edition of SummerSlam went down on Sunday, August 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The show featured six matches, including four title changes on the line across the US, Interim Women’s, Intercontinental and World Heavyweight Championships, alongside a Number One Contender’s match and a Human Monies on a Pole match.
Kevin Owens made a sensational return to win a four-way for the right to face CM Punk, Baron Corbin dethroned Trick Williams for the US Title, Chelsea Green claimed the Interim Women’s Championship in a five-way ladder match, and Chad Gable won the Intercontinental Title in his hometown.
In the main event, Roman Reigns retained the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins. With the conclusion of Night 2, let us take a look at the five key takeaways from Sunday’s edition of WWE SummerSlam 2026.
5. Roman Reigns settles the score the right way
The main event between Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins went beyond 40 minutes, and it ended clean. When the referee was knocked out, Rollins reached for a steel chair, but Reigns cut him off, tossed the weapon aside, and chose to finish the fight man-to-man instead.
Reigns walked away with the World Heavyweight Championship still around his waist, closing this chapter of the rivalry on his own terms. It sets up an interesting question of where WWE takes Rollins next, given he has now come up short in consecutive high-profile chances at the title.
4. Chelsea Green finally gets her world title moment
Chelsea Green outlasted Charlotte Flair, Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill and Lash Legend in a five-way ladder match to become the new Interim WWE Women’s Champion. It is the biggest championship win of Green’s career and continues her rise from comedic mid-carder to a legitimate title threat.
With Stephanie Vaquer still on the sidelines, WWE now has to decide how the interim title plays into the larger picture. A unification match down the line feels inevitable once Vaquer is back in the fold.
3. Chad Gable delivers a hometown fairytale
‘Minneapolis’s own’ Chad Gable defeated Penta in a hard-fought, physical Intercontinental Championship match in front of his hometown Minneapolis crowd. The victory capped an emotional night for Gable, who followed it up with a heartfelt post-match promo that echoed some of his previous tearful moments on the microphone.
It is the kind of feel-good story WWE loves to build around a hometown show, and it gives Gable a genuine featured spot with the Intercontinental Title now in his possession.
2. Baron Corbin’s redemption is complete
Baron Corbin returned from his time away rebranded as a serious grappler after reportedly becoming an accomplished Jiu-Jitsu competitor, and he backed it up by defeating Trick Williams for the United States Championship. The match spilled outside the ring multiple times, with Corbin eventually getting the better of a brutal brawl.
It is a significant reinvention for Corbin, who has struggled to escape being viewed as a comedy act for much of his run. Winning the US Title on the SummerSlam stage gives him a real chance to be taken seriously again.
1. Kevin Owens steals the show with his return
Nothing on Night 2 topped the reaction to Kevin Owens returning after 17 months out with a serious neck injury. Nick Aldis added Owens and Gunther to what was originally a Sami Zayn vs Finn Balor Number One Contender’s match, turning it into a fatal four-way, and Owens capped his comeback by hitting a Stunner on Zayn to earn the win.
Owens now heads toward a showdown with CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship, and reports suggest Kevin Owens returning also opens the door for a future collision course with Randy Orton and the Cody Rhodes feud that kicked off on Night 1. Either way, this was the pop of the night and arguably the standout moment of the entire SummerSlam weekend.
