The Idea

The five-part docuseries promises an unfiltered look into the creative chaos, emotional highs, and crushing lows that take place outside the ring.
It’s pro-wrestling like you’ve never seen it before, unscripted, raw, and yes, very real. The show has five episodes as mentioned above, and is narrated by Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque.
The Execution
While the show was already a hot topic of debate among hardcore fans, as the promotion is not just breaking kayfabe (the illusion that everything happening is real) but giving fans access to witness how things work in the gorilla position, writers’ room, and more.
Similar to many sports series on Netflix, the company is also trying to bring in new fans via this series, using the ‘new era’ tag and explaining minute details to offer an intriguing, behind-the-scenes look at the world of sports entertainment.

Review
Let’s get the good things out of the way first: the editing, especially during the Royal Rumble match, is pretty crisp and what you expect from a product that was the WWE and Netflix logos slapped onto it.
Whether the docu-series is able to bring in new fans like many Netflix series on other sports have been able to it remains to be seen. However, the series would have achieved way more if it were produced by an entity outside of WWE.
The series is well-polished but feels less authentic, offering little to fans who are already familiar with the industry through podcasts and insiders, many of whom do a better job of pulling back the curtain than the show itself.
However, the series does achieve success in introducing the stars and showcasing their personal journeys, making viewers connect with them on a personal level, while it can be engaging for fans unfamiliar with pro wrestling.
Rating: 6.5/10
Opinion
“It’s hard to know exactly what WWE’s objectives were with this docuseries or whether they’ve achieved them, but the execution feels overly controlled. New fans hoping to gain real insight into pro wrestling might be better off exploring YouTube, where content tends to be more candid and informative.”
“However, the problem with such moves is that hardcore fans tend to dislike them, while casual viewers binge them. Whether those casuals stick around remains to be seen. At the end of the day, it’s the hardcore fans who always show up, while casuals drift in and out.”
