Asian Games 2026: Ankush Panghal clinches gold in men’s 80kg boxing
This marked India’s first men’s boxing gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Games
Indian boxer Ankush Panghal won gold medal in the men’s 80kg event at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Friday, October 2.
The 21-year-old Haryana native defeated South Korea’s Kim Minseong 4-0 by split decision in the gold medal bout.
This marked India’s first boxing gold medal in the men’s division at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Earlier, India had won two bronze medals in men’s boxing: Kapil Pokhariya in the 90kg and Narender Berwal in the 90+kg events.
Ankush’s title victory was the third gold medal won by Indian pugilists at the Aichi-Nagoya Games. Earlier in the tournament, Lovlina Borgohain and Parveen Hooda won gold medals in the women’s 75kg and 65kg events, respectively. Priya Ghangas won bronze in the women’s 60kg event.
With six medals in the bag, this marks India’s most successful boxing campaign at the Asian Games in terms of gold medals. The last time an Indian male boxer won an Asiad gold was Amit Panghal in 2018.

Ankush entered the tournament as one of the biggest medal contenders for India, having won gold at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. The pugilist from Hisar dominated the gold medal fight at the Aichi-Nagoya Games from the beginning.

The Indian boxer won the opening round 4-1, utilising his superior speed and footwork. He then won the second round unanimously 5-0. Ankush secured a 4-1 win in the third round to seal a 4-0 victory.
This was a superb result for the young boxer, who also won a silver medal at the 2025 World Boxing Cup in New Delhi.
