His medal also took India’s tally to four in the World Archery Championships 2023.
Ojas Pravin Deotale won the third gold medal for India in the ongoing World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin. Earlier Aditi Swami Gopichand clinched a historic first-ever individual gold medal for India, while the Compound Women’s Team also won Gold a day before. Ojas Pravin Deotale has now become the first-ever Male Archery World Champion from India. He defeated Poland’s Lukasz Przybylski with a perfect score of 150, while the Polish archer scored 149.
Earlier, Ojas bagged an upset win over World No. 1 Mike Schloesser of Netherlands with a score of 149-148 in the semi-finals. He also defeated Poland’s Przemyslaw Konecki 148-144 in the quarter-finals.
His historic gold medal also ensured India finished their campaign in the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin with their best-ever medal haul (4). India won three gold medals and one bronze with all four coming in the Compound event – which is a non-Olympic event with only archery recurve competitions taking place at the Olympics.
Unfortunately, India’s recurve archers failed to make it to the medal rounds, missing out on the Olympic quota places there were on offer in Berlin for Paris Olympics 2024.
Earlier, the Women’s Compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Parneet Kaur and Aditi Gopichand Swami combined to win India’s first-ever gold medal at the World Archery Championships. The Indian trio scripted history by defeating top seeds Mexico 235-229 in the final. They had also knocked out defending champions Colombia in the semi-finals.

This was followed by Aditi Gopichand Swami becoming India’s first-ever individual World Champion in Archery. By winning the senior Archery World Championships at just 17 years old, Aditi also has become the youngest-ever world champion. Aditi, who is also the U-18 Youth World Champion, achieved the feat by beating Mexico’s Andrea Becerra 149-147 in the final.
Meanwhile, Jyothi Surekha who lost to Aditi in an all-Indian semi-final clash in the Individual Women’s Compound event, recovered well to clinch the bronze medal by defeating Ipek Tomruk of Turkey with a perfect score.
The three gold medals won saw India top the medal tally with a total haul of four medals on the penultimate day of the World Archery Championships 2023. This is the first time India have won a gold medal in the 92-year history of the competition. Before this, India had won a total of 11 medals – 9 silver and 2 bronze.
