The former Tottenham Hotspur manager has had his say on the situation at Old Trafford.

Jose Mourinho fell victim to scrutiny after a disappointing Carabao Cup loss to a much weaker side Derby County. In the next game away at West Ham in the Premier League, Manchester United lost again questions started raising about Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford. Many ex-United players, pundits, former Premier League managers blamed Mourinho for United’s downfall. Amidst this heavy load of criticism, the Red Devils played Newcastle United in the following fixture and fortunately for the Portuguese manager, they sealed a hard-fought comeback victory at Old Trafford. The result provided a relief for Mourinho as international break came on and granted him some time to plan for the upcoming fixtures.

However, the criticism didn’t seem to stop as Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and other Sky Sports pundits all spoke against the former Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea manager. The latest person join the party was Tim Sherwood.

According to Sherwood, it is the disputes Mourinho has been picking with the club’s board and some of their players, as well as his constant battles with the press that has most undermined the ‘Special One’. “Sometimes you can create your own fires. You have enough problems putting them out, but if you are creating them yourself and then putting them out…,” said the former Aston Villa and Tottenham boss while talking to The Debate.

“And at times I think he picks fights with the wrong people. You cannot pick a fight at Manchester United, it is an institution, that football club. It is bigger than any individual. So why should you pick a fight with them? And Jose knows it has not been good enough.”

Furthermore, Sherwood added that Mourinho has to start winning matches on a regular basis now. It is the only way he can help Manchester United overcome their crisis and answer their critics. And knowing that Mourinho has done it before, Sherwood believes that he can do it again, get himself back on track.

“He is a winner, a serial winner, he wins everywhere he goes. He needs great respect for that. But what has happened in the past, is in the past. Jose is still a football manager now and he needs to start winning things.”

“He needs to win the Premier League for a club that has Man Utd’s stature.

Sherwood also believes that Mourinho is not a fool not to know that he is going to be criticised for his failures at a club like Man Utd.

“To win the Europa League and the League Cup is good, but it is not what they want. They want to win the Premier League again. They want to start winning it, they used to win it every year.”

Sherwood is of the thought that it isn’t a fault of the authorities at United. After all they have backed Mourinho everytime and have also provided him as much as £350 million which is a huge amount. The 55 year-old has helped United reach second place but they need to go one step further now,he said.
