China leads the medal tally with 43 Gold.

The Asian Games have been a prestigious platform for badminton players from across Asia since its debut as a demonstration sport in the 1958 Tokyo Asian Games. It became a regular competitive sport in 1962, and its popularity has only grown since. As we look forward to the 2023 edition of badminton at the Asian Games, scheduled to take place from September 28th to October 7th at the Binjiang Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, let's reflect on the historical journey of this sport in the competition.

1962: A Grand Debut

In 1962, Jakarta hosted the Asian Games, marking the debut of badminton as a regular sport. Host nation Indonesia shone brightly, securing five gold medals. Three of these golds came from individual events (Men's Singles, Women's Singles, and Women's Doubles), while the Men's Team and Women's Team each contributed two golds. Notably, the mixed doubles event was not conducted during this edition.

Asian Games Postponement

The Asian Games are traditionally held every four years. However, the 2022 edition faced a postponement due to the rising cases of COVID-19 in host nation China. As a result, the tournament was rescheduled to 2023.

Legendary Players and Memorable Moments

Several legendary players have left their mark on Asian Games' badminton history. Lin Dan of China, Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia, and Zhao Jianhua of China have each clinched the prestigious gold medal twice. In the men's doubles category, Rexy Mainaky and Ricky Subagja of Indonesia stand out as the most successful pair with two gold medals (1994, 1998).

India's Pursuit of Gold

India, while a powerhouse in world badminton, has yet to secure a gold medal at the Asian Games. PV Sindhu came closest in 2018 when she clinched a silver medal, losing to Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei in the gold medal match. Saina Nehwal also contributed to India's medal tally with a bronze in the same edition. The Indian Badminton Contingent will be eager to make history in their quest for a maiden gold.
