The 20th edition of the Asian Games gets underway on September 19 and runs through October 4 across Japan’s Aichi Prefecture. It will be just the third time Japan hosts the event, after Tokyo in 1958 and Hiroshima in 1994.
Known as the world’s second-largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, this edition brings together 46 nations across 43 sports and 469 medal events. China, Japan, South Korea and India go in as the traditional heavyweights, and fans will have plenty to watch.

Most previous editions of the Asian Games have had a central Athletes’ Village. This time, there won’t be one. Organisers cited construction costs and concerns about selling off apartments after the Games in a region already facing population decline.
Hence, they opted instead for a mixed setup, with hotels, temporary container housing at Nagoya Port, and even a cruise ship — the Costa Serena, meant to hold around 4,600 athletes and officials. The whole plan was designed for about 15,000 people, but registrations have now crossed 17,000, and some team officials have had to sort out their own stays.

For precision sports like shooting and archery, staying on a moving ship is a genuine concern. For team sports like cricket, complaints have been raised over tight hotel rooms, washrooms reportedly located hundreds of metres from tented dressing areas, and nowhere near enough storage for kit bags.
Athletes at a multi-sport Games are usually juggling training, matches and recovery on very short turnarounds, and getting proper rest matters just as much as fitness or form. Cramped rooms, shared spaces or a long walk to basic facilities can eat into recovery time and affect sleep, focus and injury management, and that adds up fast over a packed schedule spanning multiple days.
For an event with the history and standing of the Asian Games, basic housing standards aren’t really optional. India has been one of the loudest voices raising these issues. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), flagged concerns over the stadium and room arrangements at Korogi Sports Park, a venue that had to be built from the ground up in roughly 17 months.
Reports even suggested the BCCI was considering a weakened “B” squad, which could have meant marquee players like Jasprit Bumrah missing the tournament. That idea was later rejected, with the board clarifying it wouldn’t send a second-string side.

Japan Cricket Association (JCA) officials have since said hotel stays are being sorted for cricket teams, and the Olympic Council of Asia, along with Games organisers, maintain that suitable accommodation has been secured for everyone who registered on time.
