Seema Kaliramna finished fourth in the women’s discus throw, while Tanya Chaudhary secured fourth place in the women’s hammer throw with a personal best of 65.35m.

The Indian women’s 4x100m relay quartet of Abinaya Rajarajan, Tamanna, Sneha Sathyanarayana and Sudeshna Shivankar also finished fourth in the final.

Shooting

Shooting saw India come close to several additional medals. Kamaljeet Sahlot, Kedarling Balakrishna Uchaganve and Aakash Bharadwaj finished fourth in the men’s 10m air pistol team event.

The women’s team of Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Suruchi Singh also narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the women’s 10m air pistol team event.

In the individual events, Anantjeet Singh Naruka finished fourth in men’s skeet, while Raiza Dhillon took fourth place in women’s skeet.

Rowing

Rowing produced two notable fourth-place finishes for India. Balraj Panwar finished fourth in the men’s single sculls Final A, clocking 6:54.80. The Indian pair of Rohit Kumar and Ujjwal Kumar Singh also finished fourth in the men’s lightweight double sculls Final A.

Sailing

Vishnu Saravanan finished fourth in the men’s dinghy (ILCA 7) event. He remained in medal contention but ultimately missed the podium. India’s sailing campaign therefore ended with another narrow near miss.

India had several near misses despite a historic medal haul

The fourth-place finishes underline how competitive India’s campaign was across disciplines. Several athletes were within touching distance of a medal, with the difference between fourth and third place sometimes coming down to a handful of points, centimetres or seconds.

Among the most notable misses were Sable in the steeplechase, Shaili in the long jump, Panwar in rowing, Tilottama in shooting and Vishnu Saravanan in sailing.

At the same time, India converted many other close medal opportunities into podium finishes, helping the contingent end the Games with 85 medals and a fourth-place finish.

Overall, the list comprises 19 medal event results in which Indian athletes or teams finished fourth, involving 30 individual athletes when team event members are counted separately.

The results reflect both the depth of India’s campaign and the fine margins that separated several athletes from an additional medal in Aichi-Nagoya.
