India finished fourth with 85 medals — 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze

India finished fourth in the medal table at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games 2026, securing 85 medals, including 21 golds. That is its second-biggest haul at the Asian Games, behind Hangzhou 2023, where India won 106.

Behind the totals sit many maiden medals, which makes the campaign all the more sweet. Some came in sports that were new to the Games, and others came in events where India had never reached the podium before.

Mixed martial arts

Suchika Tariyal won India’s first Asian Games medal in MMA, a bronze in the women’s traditional 60kg category. MMA was one of six sports making its debut at the Games.

Tariyal is a national-level judoka who reached a bronze-medal bout at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. She also competed in kurash at the 2022 Asian Games and won a world title in fighting jiu-jitsu in 2024.

She lost to Singapore’s Hui Hoon Teo in overtime, but the bronze medal made her the first Indian to claim an Asian Games MMA podium finish. It was India’s only medal among the newly introduced sports.

Soft tennis

Jay Meena secured India’s first-ever Asian Games medal in soft tennis by reaching the men’s singles semi-finals. Soft tennis is a niche sport, and India had never reached the podium before. His bronze could pave the way for greater success in the discipline at future Asian Games.

Pole vault

Baranica Elangovan won bronze in the women’s pole vault. It is India’s first Asian Games medal in the pole vault across both genders.

She had earlier set the national record at 4.23m before Sindhushree Ganesha raised it to 4.25m. Pole vault has been a difficult event for Indian athletes at this level, so the medal marks a real step forward for a technical field event.

Sepaktakraw (men’s quadrant)

India’s men’s quadrant team won bronze in sepaktakraw after losing 2-0 to hosts Japan in the semi-final. It is India’s first Asian Games medal in the quadrant event.

India’s earlier sepaktakraw medals had come in the regu events. The result adds another discipline where India can now compete for medals.

Shooting (women’s trap)

Neeru Dhanda won the women’s trap with an Asian record score of 28 in the final, well above the previous record of 24. It was India’s first Asian Games gold in the women’s trap event. It was India’s first individual gold medal of the Games at the time.

Trap has traditionally been a weaker area for Indian shooters compared with rifle and pistol, so a dominant win in the event stands out. Dhanda added mixed team trap gold the next day and was named India’s flag bearer for the closing ceremony.

Archery (mixed team recurve)

Kumkum Mohod and Dhiraj Bommadevara won silver in the mixed team recurve. It was India’s first medal in the event in Asian Games history. The pairing gave India another recurve podium, a discipline where it has long been weaker than in compound.

Archery (women’s recurve team)

Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum beat South Korea 5-3 in the final to win India’s first Asian Games gold in the women’s recurve team event. India had medalled in recurve before, but never reached the podium summit in the women’s team event.

The victory also ended South Korea’s seven-edition winning streak in the event. The result showed that India’s recurve archers can now beat the best in Asia, and that the country is no longer relying only on compound.

Archery (individual recurve)

Seventeen-year-old Kumkum created history yet again for the third time, becoming the first Indian woman to win individual recurve gold at the Asian Games. The final was tied 5-5 before Kumkum prevailed 10-8 in the shoot-off.

Her run also guaranteed India a women’s recurve quota for the LA 2028 Olympics. She finished with three medals in Nagoya, including the team gold and a mixed team silver.

Golf (women’s individual)

Pranavi Urs made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual golf gold medal at the Asian Games. The win ended India’s 24-year wait for a title in the sport.

India’s women’s team of Pranavi, Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar also added a historic silver medal in the team event. India has enjoyed success in Asian Games golf before, but women’s individual gold had remained elusive until Pranavi’s breakthrough.

Pranavi’s ability to hold her nerve under pressure and deliver gold speaks volumes about her resilience and character. The outcome also highlights that Indian women are now competitive in a sport long dominated by East Asian nations.

Which sport did India win its first-ever Asian Games medal in during 2026?

India won maiden Asian Games medals in several sports/events in Aichi-Nagoya, including mixed martial arts, soft tennis, women’s pole vault, men’s double sculls, women’s dinghy sailing and men’s quadrant sepaktakraw. India also achieved first-ever medals in specific shooting and archery events.
