India are currently joint-10th in the overall medal table

India started its Asian Games 2026 campaign with two silver medals on the opening day in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday.

Elavenil Valarivan, India’s top rifle shooter, was involved in both medals on Day 1. First, she was part of the Indian trio, which clinched silver with a combined score of 1898 in the women’s 10m air rifle team event.

Valarivan then claimed silver in the women’s 10m air rifle individual final, scoring 252.4 to finish behind the host nation’s Hinata Taichi, who clinched gold with a Games Record score of 253.

Suchika Tariyal also confirmed a first-ever MMA medal for India at the Asian Games after she entered the semi-finals of the women’s traditional 60kg MMA event.

A silver medal was also confirmed by the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women’s cricket team, who qualified for the final of the women’s cricket event. India are the defending champions in the event.

Elavenil Valarivan was the star of India’s opening day medal rush, taking an individual silver medal and helping India take a team silver medal with Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod.

In the individual final, Elavenil scored 252.4 points to finish behind Japan’s Hinata Taichi, who won the gold medal with a record score of 253.0. Hyojin Ban of South Korea won the bronze medal with a score of 230.4.

Elavenil was 0.3 points off Taichi on the last two shots, and still in the hunt after a 10.4 to the Japanese shooter’s 10.6, extending the gap to 0.5 points.

She needed to finish strong to turn the contest around but managed 10.1 in the penultimate shot while Taichi scored 10.2 to clinch the gold medal and set a new Asian Games record.

India has so far won two shooting medals, both silver. India’s shooters returned from the previous edition in Hangzhou with a record 22 medals, including seven gold, nine silver and six bronze medals.

Mixed martial arts fighter Suchika Tariyal also assured a medal for India as she qualified for the semi-finals of the women’s traditional MMA 60kg event.

India’s campaign in hockey also began on Sunday. In the first match, the Indian women’s team beat Uzbekistan 19-0 while the men’s team played the first match against Indonesia.

Indian athletes were also in action in table tennis, badminton, cricket and other sports as the country began its campaign on the opening day.

What to expect from Indian contingent on 21st September?

Shooting will be again among India’s main medal prospects.

Rudrankksh Patil, Parth Mane and Himanshu Dhillon will compete in the individual qualification event. The team event will commence at 6.15 am IST, followed by the individual final at 9.00 am.

The skeet shooting qualification events will start at 6.30 am IST, with the likes of Anant Jeet Singh Naruka and Maheshwari Chauhan in action.

Meanwhile, the Indian men’s badminton team, silver medallists from three years ago, will take on Bangladesh in the round of 16 in the team event, with hosts Japan awaiting them in the quarter-finals if they win.

After a 19-0 thrashing of Uzbekistan on the opening day, the Indian women’s hockey team will look to carry forward its momentum when they face Indonesia in its second pool match.
