The Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya have started with a bang, with some high-quality action right from day 1.
India opened its account on Sunday with two silver medals, both from shooting, and both involving Elavenil Valarivan. She, Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa K Vinod scored 1898.0 in the women’s 10m air rifle team event.

Suchika Tariyal also guaranteed a medal in mixed martial arts, which is making its Asian Games debut. She beat Mongolia’s Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the women’s traditional 60kg quarter-final and now will play for a spot in the gold medal match.
In other sports involving group-stage matches, the country showcased its dominance with convincing wins. The Indian women’s cricket team entered the final after an easy win against Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the Indian men’s hockey team thrashed Indonesia 13-1 in its Pool A opener, while the women’s team crushed Uzbekistan to kick off their campaign in style at Asian Games 2026.

China lead the medal tally with 11 gold, six silver, and three bronze medals. Japan’s Hinata Taichi won the women’s 10m air rifle individual gold with an Asian Games record score of 253.0, finishing 0.6 points ahead of India’s Elavenil Valarivan.
South Korea’s Ban Hyojin took bronze. China won the team event with 1904.2, setting a qualification world record.
In the triathlon, hosts Japan claimed their first gold through Takumi Hojo, who won the men’s race in 52:56. China’s Zhang Xirui finished second, nine seconds behind. China also dominated the women’s race, with Lin Xinyu winning in 57:37 and teammate Huang Anqi taking silver.

China dominated the pool at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. Pan Zhanle held off South Korea’s Kim Youngbeom by 0.04 seconds to retain the men’s 100m freestyle title, while Xu Jiayu won the men’s 100m backstroke in a Games record 51.98, with Japan’s Hidekazu Takehara taking silver.
In the women’s events, 13-year-old Yu Zidi won the 200m butterfly in a Games record 2:05.08, with teammate Chang Mohan taking silver.
Tang Qianting won the 50m breaststroke in a Games record 29.45, while Japan’s Satomi Suzuki finished second in a national record. Li Bingjie completed China’s dominance by winning the 1500m freestyle ahead of Singapore’s Gan Ching Hwee.
South Korea’s first gold came in modern pentathlon, with Sung Seung-min winning the women’s individual event. The men then defended their Hangzhou crown by winning the team title with 4,779 points, while Jun Woong-tae claimed individual silver.
In karate, Japan’s Maho Ono won the women’s individual kata, giving Japan its ninth consecutive title in the event. In the sports reaching their final stages, Myanmar created history in teqball as Wai Khin Hnin fought back from a set down to beat Indonesia’s Sumaya 2-1 (10-12, 12-8, 12-9), securing the sport’s first-ever Asian Games gold.
In wushu, Macao, China, claimed a one-two finish in the men’s changquan, with Kuong Chi Hin winning gold with 9.723 points ahead of teammate Song Chi Kuan. Indonesia’s Seraf Naro Siregar took bronze.
Cycling action began at the Shinshiro Cycling Road Course, where Kazakhstan’s Rinata Sultanova won the women’s individual time trial in 36:23.72, finishing ahead of China’s Zhang Hao.
