Indian athletes had an outstanding campaign in Hangzhou
India will field a 508-member contingent at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4. The Indian athletes will compete in numerous medal events across 37 sports.
Fans will hope the Indian squad members can replicate the form that they displayed at the Hangzhou 2022 Games, where the country finished fourth with a record 106 medals. This included 28 golds, 38 silvers, and 40 bronzes.
India’s 28 gold medals in Hangzhou marked its highest-ever haul at the continental tournament, surpassing the 16 golds won at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Games. Shooting led the way with seven golds, followed by athletics with six and archery with five.
India’s Aichi-Nagoya contingent features several of the country’s biggest sporting stars, who will aim to defend their titles at the Games.

The Indian archers were a massive success at the Hangzhou Games. Jyothi Surekha and Ojas Deotale clinched gold in the mixed team compound event. Surekha and Deotale also claimed gold in the compound individual and team events.
Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar clinched a couple of golds in the men’s 10m air rifle team and men’s 50m rifle three-position team events. The men’s trap team also clinched gold. Four other shooting events also brought gold medals.
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won India’s first badminton gold medal, clinching the men’s doubles title. The squash players won gold in mixed doubles and the men’s teams event. Rohan Bopanna and Rutuja Bhosale won gold in mixed doubles tennis.
The Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams won gold in their respective events, as did the men’s and women’s kabaddi teams. The men’s field hockey team won gold.

India dominated in athletics, with Neeraj Chopra and Annu Rani winning the men’s and women’s javelin titles. However, the duo will not be able to defend their titles at the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with the former ruled out due to injury and the latter failing to qualify.
