India will face Pakistan in the men’s hockey semi-final today.

Some matches bring a unique atmosphere, and the India vs Pakistan hockey match at the Asian Games 2026 is one of them. The two nations have met 184 times since the 1956 Melbourne Olympics final, and Pakistan still lead the overall record, 82 wins to India’s 70, with 32 draws.

This Thursday in Kakamigahara, Japan, they meet again with something concrete on the line – the winner of the tournament earns an early ticket to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

India have scored 49 goals in five matches and conceded just four. They have already beaten Pakistan three times this year, twice in the FIH Pro League in London and once at the World Cup. But India’s coach Craig Fulton called semi-finals “games of consequence,”.

If we had to pick the three Indian players most likely to decide the game, they would be these:

3. Dilpreet Singh

Dilpreet leads India’s scoring with nine goals, and he has done it without being the team’s penalty-corner specialist. Goals from open play are far more difficult to anticipate and plan for. A defence can prepare for a drag-flick, but it’s much harder to prepare for a forward who keeps finding space.

India’s goals have come from across the lineup, making them difficult to stop. Pakistan cannot simply mark a man. Dilpreet is the one most likely to punish them if they get careless in the middle of the pitch.

2. Abhishek

Abhishek also has eight goals, level with the captain. If Pakistan’s defence focuses on containing Dilpreet, it could leave Abhishek with more space, and the same applies in reverse.

That matters even more because India are without midfielder Raj Kumar Pal, who fractured his left thumb in the final pool match.

His replacement, Nilakanta Sharma, is experienced, having played at the Olympics and a World Cup, and Fulton called him “a nice addition.” Even so, a forward line that is already scoring freely would make the change easier to absorb.

1. Harmanpreet Singh

First, a quick explanation for newcomers. A penalty corner is hockey’s version of a set piece.

Whenever a team commits certain fouls inside its defending circle, the opposition is awarded a penalty corner — a set-piece opportunity to score. Such moments can prove decisive, with teams sometimes winning or losing entire tournaments because of them.

Harmanpreet Singh is India’s specialist at them. His “drag-flick” is a low, sweeping shot struck with so much force that goalkeepers and defenders barely see it. He has eight goals in the tournament.

Pakistan’s own top player, Sufiyan Khan, is a player of the same calibre, turning this into an individual duel alongside the team contest.
