India will face unbeaten Malaysia in a high-stakes final with back-to-back Asian Games gold on the line.
The Indian men’s hockey team are one win away from defending their Asian Games title and making history in Aichi-Nagoya. After defeating Pakistan 4-3 in a dramatic semi-final, India will face Malaysia in the gold medal match on October 3.
The stakes are even higher because the winner will directly qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. India are also chasing their second successive Asian Games gold after winning the title at the 2022 Hangzhou Games.
India looked firmly in control after taking a 3-0 lead against Pakistan, but allowed their opponents to mount a comeback and level the score. Abhishek then scored the decisive goal in the final minute to send India into the final.

Meanwhile, Malaysia defeated South Korea 2-1 in their semi-final and remain unbeaten in the tournament. India will therefore face another consistent side in the final. So, what can India do differently to secure another Asian Games title?
Tighten up the defence
Catch Every Update, Anytime, Anywhere
India’s biggest area for improvement will be their defensive organisation and discipline. The team had a three-goal advantage against Pakistan but allowed the opposition to score three times, bringing the contest back to 3-3.
Such lapses could prove costly against Malaysia. India will need to maintain their defensive shape even when leading and ensure that the midfield does not leave too much space between the lines.
Make penalty corners count

Penalty corners will once again be one of India’s biggest attacking weapons. Captain Harmanpreet Singh has been among the team’s leading scorers, and his drag flick remains a major threat.
India created opportunities against Pakistan but will need to be more clinical in the final. Converting penalty corners efficiently could become especially important if Malaysia defend deep and force India to rely on set-piece situations.
However, as defensive strategies have evolved significantly over the years, defenders have become increasingly effective at neutralising penalty-corner threats. If Malaysian defenders thwart India’s attacking set-piece strategies, they deserve full credit.
Control the midfield
The midfield battle could be just as important as the contest inside both circles. India have experienced options in Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad, Nilakanta Sharma and Raj Kumar Pal, giving the team different options in possession and during defensive transitions.
India must avoid letting Malaysia’s midfielders dictate the match’s pace. Quick passing, intelligent movement and maintaining possession under pressure will be crucial. The midfielders will also have to track runners, win second balls and prevent quick Malaysian counter-attacks.
Use pace and width in attack
India will also need to use their attacking pace effectively. Players such as Abhishek and Dilpreet Singh can stretch the Malaysian defence with their movement.
Rather than allowing Malaysia to settle into a compact defensive structure, India can move the ball quickly from flank to flank to create openings around the circle.
The transition from defence to attack will be particularly important. India must utilise their pace immediately after winning possession, while ensuring they do not surrender the ball cheaply. Keeping width can also help open spaces through the middle.
Keep Malaysia’s forwards under control
Malaysia possess attacking threats of their own and have shown throughout the tournament that they can punish defensive lapses. India will therefore need to prevent the Malaysian forwards from receiving the ball comfortably inside the circle.
Compact defending will be important, with midfielders closing down passing lanes while defenders maintain their positions.
Avoid another late fightback
The biggest lesson from the Pakistan semi-final is that India cannot afford to lose control after taking a substantial lead.
The defending champions had built a 3-0 advantage but allowed Pakistan to come back into the contest. Against Malaysia, India will need to remain composed regardless of the scoreline.
If India take the lead, retaining possession and controlling the tempo could be more important than constantly searching for another goal.
A chance to retain the title and make history
India have won the Asian Games men’s hockey gold four times — 1966, 1998, 2014 and 2023. They finished with bronze in 2018 before returning to the top at Hangzhou. The 2026 final brings India a chance to win consecutive Asian Games golds for the first time in their history.
Manpreet was part of India’s gold medal-winning teams in 2014 and 2023 and could add a third Asian Games title to his collection.
Direct qualification for LA 2028 at stake
Beyond the gold medal, the biggest prize is the direct Olympic qualification berth for Los Angeles 2028.
The Asian Games men’s hockey champions earn a direct Olympics berth, meaning India can seal their place at LA 2028 by defeating Malaysia in the final. A loss would mean they have to take the alternative route to Olympic qualification.
India have already survived a dramatic knockout contest against Pakistan. They now face another unbeaten opponent with both history and Olympic qualification at stake.
The final will be played on October 3 at 3:30 PM IST at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium. India will need defensive discipline, greater control in midfield, clinical penalty-corner execution and patience in attack to overcome Malaysia and retain their Asian Games men’s hockey gold.
