They set a new Asian and National Record with a sub three-minute finish in the qualifiers.
The Indian men’s quartet of Muhammad Anas Yahiya, Amoj Jacob, Muhammad Ajmal Variyathodi and Rajesh Ramesh ran a credible race to finish fifth by clocking 2:59.92 in the finals of men’s 4x400m relay event at the World Athletics Championships 2023.
Anas, the first runner from India, set off to good start, but encountered a hiccup in executing a smooth turnover during the last bend. This momentarily affected the team’s rhythm while transitioning into the second leg. Amoj Jacob, taking over from the penultimate spot, faced the challenge head-on, striving to bridge the gap between India and the other teams ahead.
As the baton changed hands once again, Ajmal’s performance became a pivotal moment in the race. With determination and a strong recovery effort, he managed to ascend from his starting position to secure the third-to-last spot. This resurgence displayed not only his individual skill but also the tenacity of the entire Indian team.
In the anchor position, Rajesh Ramesh took the baton for the final stretch. His powerful run showcased the heart and spirit of the team, culminating in a collective effort that resulted in a time of 2:59.92s. This impressive achievement earned them a commendable fifth-place finish just ahead of Botswana among fierce competitors.
The India quartet had earlier accomplished an exceptional performance during the qualification round. They shattered the Asian record — previously held by Japan — by clocking 2:59.05 to qualify for their maiden final at World Athletics Championships. This outstanding achievement helped them rewrite the national record of 3:00.25 that had been set in 2021.
Despite the challenges faced during the race, the Indian team’s effort and dedication were evident in their performance. The seamless transitions between runners, the determination to overcome initial setbacks, and the synchronized efforts ultimately led them to a sub-three-minute finish. This accomplishment not only signifies the team’s potential but also their ongoing pursuit of excellence on the global stage of track and field.
With this performance the Indian quartet enter the Asian Games as the favourites to win the gold medal ahead of Japan who failed to enter the finals at World Athletics Championships 2023.
