Top five javelin throws in 2023

The javelin throw is a sport that has gained popularity in India ever since Neeraj Chopra’s historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2023. Neeraj is not the only Indian star in this discipline, as Kishore Kumar Jena from Odisha has also emerged as a global contender.
The year 2023 has seen some impressive feats and fierce competitions in the javelin throw, with several athletes vying for prestigious titles and records. In this article let’s discuss the top five javelin throws of 2023.
Kishore Kumar Jena (87.54m)
India’s Kishore Kumar Jena, 28, is a rising star in javelin throw, who has impressed many with his consistent performances this season. He threw 87.54m at the Asian Games in Hangzhou in October, winning the silver medal and narrowly missing out on the gold to his compatriot Neeraj. This was his personal best throw and the fifth-best in the world.
Jena also finished fifth at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August, with a throw of 84.77m, which was his personal best at the time. He is currently ranked seventh in the world and is one of the few athletes to have thrown over 87m in 2023.
Arshad Nadeem (87.82m)
Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, 26, made history by becoming the first Pakistani to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August. He threw 87.82m in the final, clinching the silver medal. He speared the javelin to 86.79m in the qualifying round helping him qualify for the final.
Nadeem’s personal best is 90.18m, which he achieved at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in July, where he won the gold medal and set a new Commonwealth Games record. He is currently ranked fourth in the world, and has a friendly rivalry with Neeraj, whom he first met at the 2018 Asian Games.
Julian Weber (88.72m)
Germany’s Julian Weber, 29, achieved his personal best throw of 88.72m at the German Championships in Kassel in July, winning the national title. This was the third-best throw of the year, and the fourth-best of his career.
Weber also won the International Pentecost Sport Meeting in Rehlingen, Germany, in May, with a throw of 85.85m. However, he did not win any major international title and finished fourth at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, with a throw of 84.06m. He is currently ranked third in the world, and has his sights set on the Paris Olympics in 2024.
Neeraj Chopra (88.88m)
Neeraj Chopra continued his remarkable form after becoming the first Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in athletics in 2020. He threw 88.88m at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in October, securing the gold medal and setting a new Asian Games record. This was his best throw of the year, and the second-best in the world.
He also won the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August, with a throw of 88.17m, becoming the first Indian to achieve this feat. He also finished second at the Diamond League Finals in Zurich in September registering 87.03m. He is currently the world number one athlete in javelin throw.
Jakub Vadlejch (89.51m)
Jakub Vadlejch, 33, achieved the longest javelin throw of the year, with a stunning 89.51m at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland, in June. He surpassed the previous world leader, Neeraj Chopra, who had thrown 88.67m at the Doha Diamond League in May.
Vadlejch also won the bronze medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August, with a throw of 86.67m. He is currently ranked second in the world, behind Neeraj Chopra.
