India are second in the medal tally with five gold medals to their name.

On Day 3 of the Asian Athletics Championships 2025 in Gumi, Indian athletes delivered several standout performances, with the highlight being Avinash Sable clinching gold in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a season-best time of 8:20.92, making him only the third Indian ever to win multiple steeplechase medals at the Asian Championships and the first to claim gold in this event in 36 years.

Jyothi Yarraji too produced a stunning run in the women’s 100m hurdles, winning gold with a championship record time of 12.96 seconds, marking India’s fourth gold of the championships. In the women’s long jump final, Ancy Sojan secured the silver medal with a leap of 6.33m, while Shaili Singh took bronze with 6.30m, both finishing behind Japan’s Sumire Hata.

The Indian women’s 4x400m relay team comprising Jisna Mathew, Rupal Chaudhary, Rajitha Kunja, and Subha Venkatesan clinched the gold medal with a time of 3:34.18. By the end of Day 3, India made a significant leap in the medal standings, rising to second place with a total of 14 medals, including 5 golds.

With the focus shifting to the penultimate day of the Championship, India will hope to secure their second position, as they continue to face stiff competition from Japan, who are third placed with 21 medals but trail India by one gold. Among the most anticipated appearances tomorrow, is that of Nandini Agasara, who will be seen in multiple heptathlon events including the long jump, javelin throw, and 800m.

Nandini, who recently secured gold in the women’s heptathlon at the National Games 2025 with 5601 points, is already an Asian Games bronze medalist. In the men’s javelin throw, Yash Vir Singh and Sachin Yadav will look to make their mark during the qualification rounds.

On the track, Animesh Kujur will be a key name to watch in the men’s 200m heats and potentially the semi-finals, while the women’s 200m heats will feature both Nithya Gandhe and multi-eventer Jyothi Yarraji. The men’s 4x100m relay squad, featuring Pranav Pramod, Animesh Kujur, Manikanta Hoblidhar, Amlan Borgohain, Tamilarasu, Ragul Kumar, and Gurindervir Singh, will look to build on India’s strong relay tradition in the heats.

The afternoon session brings more opportunities for medals and personal bests, with Vithya Ramraj and Anu Raghavan contesting the women’s 400m hurdles heats, and Pooja competing in the women’s high jump final. Long-distance specialists Gulveer Singh and Abhishek Pal will line up for the men’s 5000m final, while Parul Chaudhary and Ankita are set to challenge in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final.
