Gulveer Singh clocked a personal best of 3:36.72
India’s distance runner Gulveer Singh continued his divine form as he delivered a standout performance at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, clinching a silver medal in the men’s 1500m final with a personal best of 3:36.72.
Best known as a 5,000m and 10,000m specialist, Gulveer displayed surprising middle-distance speed against a tough continental field. Tucked behind the leaders for most of the race, the 28-year-old made his move on the bell lap, unleashing a strong sprint down the home stretch.

He pushed Japan’s Kazuto Iizawa all the way to the finish line, missing gold by just 0.37 seconds. Iizawa took victory in a Games-record 3:36.35, while fellow Japanese runner Nagiya Mori took bronze in 3:37.92.
The result marked Gulveer’s second silver medal of the 2026 Games. Earlier in the week, he secured second place in the men’s 10,000m in 28:29.38, improving upon his bronze-medal effort from Hangzhou in 2023.

Adding a 1500m podium to his long-distance resume highlights his remarkable versatility across different track disciplines.
Gulveer’s medal came through disciplined race tactics. While a 10,000m contest is decided by aerobic pacing, the 1500m requires sharp bursts of acceleration, tactical positioning, and a fast final kick. His ability to adapt to that faster rhythm proved crucial over the final 300 meters.

Gulveer’s switch from long-distance running to a fast 1500m race shows how versatile he has become. Usually focused on endurance, he proved he also has the speed needed to sprint past top runners.
During the race, he stayed calm in the pack before finding space on the outside to make his move. His finishing sprint took over three seconds off his personal best.
By winning silver in a middle-distance event right after his 10,000m success, Gulveer showed that Indian distance runners can now compete for medals across different track formats.
